    Hey guys,

On one of my computers, when you turn it on, it will turn on, then the black background will come up, with the taskbar, but no icons/shortcuts. It takes LITERALLY 3 minutes in order for them to appear. I'm running WinXP, gig of ram, 2.6C P4.

I tried a Scan Disk, and some Norton System Works programs - nothing. I believe it has something to do with Norton's Internet Security becuase when I shut it off, and don't let it start on boot, everything is noraml - when it's on, it is SSSLLLOOOWWW.

Can anyone point me in the right direction on what I can do to fix this other than reinstalling NIS? The last time this happened a Scan Disk took care of it.

    Thank you in advance.

    Jnick

Same thing goes with my computer. We have WAY too many desktop icons and it's slowing our computers down. Just organize 'em all into folders and that should cut the time down by a lot. (Also, you should look at how many programs activate on start-up. THAT causes a lot of slowdown)

IMHO the best thing that I ever did for my computer was to get rid of Norton. It bogged my box down to an absolute crawl. After I got rid of Norton System Works I replaced it with Avast! for AV, AdAware, Spybot S/D and Spyware Blaster for Bots and adware, and Zone Alarm for firewall. beauty little programs...... and they are all free her on the front page of MG. My box has never run better. Just my 2 cents. Norton's effect on your computer is evidenced by your statement: "when it is on...it is SLOOOOOWWWW". :D

Well it's not nortons. I took it off of starting up with windows, and it is still slow. I don't have many desktop icons. Only 2 columns . . Any other suggestions?

    Thank you.

As I said before, you probably have too many programs that activate on startup. Do yourself a favor and press ctrl+alt+delete upon startup and try and see what's bogging it down.

I would also do a thorough spyware and virus check, for the virus check you could use Trends Housecall online free checker.

And to coin a phrase.... DOES this happen in safe mode too?

when did it start going slow at boot, did you install anything new software or drivers just before the slow boot?

Halo - Nope. This happens only on my dads computer like every 2 months. I have no clue why. It just happened again.

Yes I know this threads old!

Friggin' Nortons . . . Anyone have advice on a good Anti-Virus/Internet Security program to use instead of Nortons . . . It doesn't have to be free either.

    Get rid of Norton.
People pay me to remove it all the time, and they never fail to say how much better their machine runs without it.
Go get AlarmZone, it's free, uses little overhead and it does the job.
