    Hi-

With a Major Geeker's help (thanks, musksnipe!), I recently reset-up a non-functioning W2K machine (http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=167931) and it is randomly just turning off...like somebody pulled the plug. And then the on/off switch is dead. Usually, I have to press it several times before it will work again.

It shut itself off two days ago and the switch is still dead. So, I guess that means it's not a thermal issue??

The box is a Mexus and it's got a cpu temp gauge and a fan-speed pot on the front. I have not seen it get close to high temps (normally operates: 31°-35°).

I ran Memtest and it returned zero errors in 3+ passes.

By the way, after re-setting it up it worked pretty well for several days. Then it turned itself off. It worked fine for a few days then off. Now, it seems to run for about 20-45 minutes, sometimes longer, before shutting off.

Does it sound like a bad switch or power supply issue?

Also, I've been sick so if you post a reply and I don't respond quickly that's why, so, please don't think I'm being ungrateful.

    Thanks in advance!

Ooops, sorry. While trying to research this I accidently posted it in Malware Removal. I've reposted it in Hardware. I hope that's the right thing.

when it happen to me it was a faulty power supply, purchased a new one and installed it and the computer ran fine after that.

not an expert but it worked for me

    Thanks, buggabear!

Do you know how I can test the psu?

By the way, do you know how the automatic shut-off switches work, i.e. when Windows shuts down normally and then computer automatically turns off? I was thinking it was that switch because it's not allowing me to turn it on. Maybe I can bypass it as a test?

When a psu goes bad doesn't it usually just put out too low power and/or spike? It doesn't just not give the switch zero power, or does it? I'm simply not very knowledgeable about them.

    I appreciate the help!

Apparently, nobody knew the answers to the questions I posed. So, just in case somebody is doing a search looking for similar help...

I didn't get the issue resolved but this helped make the computer more useable: by simply pressing & holding the on/off switch for 10 seconds the computer would power-up again.

Hope that's of a little help.
