Maybe I'm overcautious but I like to be offline unless actually using the 'net. It is easy to disable the connection via the small monitor icon in the tray. With XP I have a shortcut icon on the desktop to Programs\Accessories\Communications\Network Connections\Local Network - enable which lets me connect or reconnect from the desktop.

Please, can anyone tell me how to set up a similar desktop shortcut with Windows 7? Thank you.

Hey loner, welcome to major geeks : )

Im not to familiar with 7 and i dont have access to a bootable version right now, but if you can find the icon to do it in the control panel, you *should* be able to drag the icon onto the desktop and it will create a shortcut for you.

Alternatively: I have a ethernet wire with a cut-out switch so i can disconnect the modem instantly if needed, it sounds like you would could do with one too, it only cost me about £10 and i have the wire looped up the back of the monitor so it is easy to get at.

Just a note to "Q". I've got a rotary switch and other bits to make up a mechanical switch, now all I need is time!
    Thanks again,
