Today I spent an hour downloading a set of 6 desktop themes. Then they were installed. When I tried to use them, I get the following error message:

The theme could not load because one of the needed theme files could not be found. This can happen with themes that are not installed or authored correctly. You should verify that the wallpapers, screensaver, icons, sounds, and other files are in the correct location.

    Theme: C:\Document and Settings\flessa\Local Settings\Temp\Temporary Directory 7 for dragnart.zip\Program Files\Plus!\Themes\Dragon Art 4 (1024x768).Theme

I tried reinstalling and got the same message. Is that pathname where it is supposed to be, where it is, or just nonsense to confuse me? If so, it's doing a good job. I saved the file to E:My Download Files and when I check, that is where it is sitting.

What program are you using to install the msstyle? XP does not use win9x themes.

I've been using Netscape SmartDownload to download and install things for years, including some since this last XP reinstall. Never had any trouble before but guess there is always a first time.

I figured maybe the download was corrupted in some way so I am in the process of re-downloading it. When the download is finished, Netscape gives me the option of opening the file and then installing the program which I normally use. Maybe this time I should use something else? I don't think I have installed my unzipper file yet. Guess I ought to do that too.

The major problem with downloading themes for XP is that they either need to be digitally signed by MS or you have to unlock the Uxtheme.dll to allow you to use 99% of the ones you can download from Theme sites!

you can use commercially available programs like StyleXP or Windowblinds ( both available for trial in the Appearance Section )..... BUT the nice peeps at http://www.tgtsoft.com/ do have the unlocked uxtheme.dll for FREE download, not so fast tho as some info needs to be read first to sucessfully intigrate the patched file as you ARE changing system files ( I would also make System Restore point before doing this )

best instructions are to be read here at Iceman's site http://www.jonmega.com/~iceman/vs/install_instructions.php

read up and if you feel happy doing this great :) I have and their are some neat themes out there for download http://www.themexp.org/ is a goodun.

OK, I just disabled Netscape Smart Download and re-downloaded and re-installed the themes. Same problem. So, guess the problem isn't with my downloader.

Think I will check out that link and see if maybe that could give me some ideas. Wierd tho, the Silver Dragons theme worked before but now I can't get it to install either. When I open the Control Panel and click on Display, then browse, they don't show up as available themes to choose from.

It seems like I used some form of Theme Installer before. But can't remember for sure.

    Try Style XP

You might want to try style xp I use it all the time and it has given my computer a whole new look. I had no problems with it.

This program will install the theme files under c:/windows/resources/themes

maybe you need to install the themes you download on that folder.

With out the software that modifies the uxtheme.dll you might no be able to use any of the themes you download.

I went ahead and downloaded the trial version of StyleXP. I will play around with that program for the next few days and see what I come up with.

But I now have the silver dragon picture back as my desktop and that was mainly what I wanted in the first place. So I am happy at the momeht. Or I would be, if I didn't have to go to work tonight.
