Well it all started when i dl and installed the new version of spybot. It asked me to restart, and clicked yes. It starts alright, shows the win xp logo and after 5 secs it stop responding instead of going to the log on screen. After i restart it says windows could not start correctly because of a hardware or software change . It doesnt let me do "after known good configuration" it does the same thing, or does it let me in safe mode. After i click safe mode, it scrolls through files like always and stops at system/windows32/drivers/mup.sys. Does anyone have any ideas??

    thankss

Get XP CD and boot.Use recovery console, and type:chkdsk /r ,(note the space in the middle). This will solve your problem.

Booting to safe mode can take several hours and often appears to halt here. I usually leave the pc overnight to boot if this happens.

by winxp cd, do u mean the system recovery disk that came with the pc. Its a sony vaio, and the only disks that came with it is 3 System recovery disks, and 2 application recovery. When i inserted the system recovery disk it took me to restore windows to default factory settings. I dont have a winxp cd.

Any genuine microsoft XP or win 2k cd will do to access the recovery console.
The recovery console is a mini operating system in its own right so you boot the Vaio from CD, setting CD as the first boot device in BIOS if necessary.
Then at the first welcome screen hit R not enter.
input the drive to repair (probably C)
input the admin password (enter if you don't have one)
you will then be in a DOS like screen
    typein
    chkdsk /r

    and let her rip.

Did you try the long boot to safe mode?

well i cant find a winxp cd anywhere, asked couple of people they dont have any and my computer didnt come with one. Long safe boot didnt do anything
I asked around and someone posted this to me, is this a good solution " First disconnected any USB peripherals except for the mouse & keyboard.
On boot-up, enter BIOS (F1, F2, Del - Depending on your system)
Look for and "Enable" Reset System Configuration Data or similar
    Save & Exit"

i found a windows xp cd, but it goes up to 75% and then it drops back down to 50%,It finished, it said it found one or more errors and fixed it it does the same thing sticks at mup.sys Also, the light from the keyboard goes off when it stops. Mouse's optical light is still on

this is what i did: i couldnt make it to work so i looked online for other solutions
i tried disable mup.sys-i dont think i was successfull
    i renamed mup.sys to old
then did the expand command to copy new mup file from xp disk to c: that didnt work cause when i restarted it couldnt find mup.sys and it now stuck at sbp2port.sys So i did the copy command form xp disk to c: drive and now its stuck again at mup.sys

they say it might be usb malfunction, but the usb board in attached on the motherboard so i cant take it out unless there is a way to disable the usb board from bios which i donot know.

    ?????

    I'm a trifle confused.

The PC concerned is not the pavillion listed at the bottom of your posts, but another one, a Sony Vaio?

You have the recovery disks for this Vaio.

I think you have to use them and reinstall the pc

Is this pc a laptop? Do you need to copy data from it to some where else?
If so can you run it from a floppy or memory stick?

If the Vaio is a desk top take the hard drive out and temporarily connect it to the Pavillion as a slave.

You will then be able to read off all your data, before returning it to the Vaio. You can also run check disk on it from the pavillion, this often works better when drive is connected as a slave and may be sufficient to get the Vaio working without reinstallation.

the pavilion is a laptop, how would i got about doing that. I read you can get an external hd case, put in the internal hd and connect it via usb and access the info Is that how it would work?? sounds too easy, unless the hard part is taking out the hard drive from the pc

Tricky, I didn't realise the pavillion was a laptop.

Normally the problem is with a laptop drive; these are more highly stressed. I have adapters to connect these to regular pcs.

There are USB to IDE adapters available, but I have not found these so reliable.

If your Vaio software will let you (not all OEM wWindows will do this) install a second copy of windows onto the hard drive of the Vaio, without formatting the drive.. When asked where to install specify a new folder such as Windows2.
If you still have the borrowed Microsoft CD, use this, the Windows will work for 30 days.

Either way you will have a working operating system on the Vaio and can copy the data somewhere else, before a full and proper re-install.

I personally don't like Spybot as I have seen it cause this problem several times in various versions.
