Desktop

Not sure whether this should be here or in Hardware. When I boot up my desktop shows as a small image in the middle of the screen. I can go into display and change it back so that it is the correct size, but when I restart or cold boot it comes right back at the small desktop image. I have downloaded the latest update to video. I also tried restore to a point that was okay, to no avail. Here is what is in my puter. Dell Inspiron 8000.

Look on your keyboard for a LCD>CRT key.

You will likely have to use it in conjunction with the FN key.

Ive seen this most often when the Dell laptop thinks its displaying on a crt.

 

Tried that but didn't fix it.

 

Thats the only time Ive seen that problem.

You can check and make sure that yes indeed, thats the issue by inserting your Windows ME CD and booting to it. If you see the same small screen, then the laptop thinks its on CRT.

EDIT: I see no reason why a CMOS reset wouldn't fix it.

 

Yes the cd sees it as a small screeen too, and reset cmos doesn't help either. What about updating cmos?

 

Maybe. Im telling ya, its a setting, just dont know any other way than through the keyboard to reset it

The laptop thinks its on CRT, I would tell ya to call Dell to fix it, but they are idiots

 

every time I reboot my custom icons revert back to the ugly windows standard... remind me never to upgrade again.

I have them working on it too, by email, so they probably aren't available today. They never have been much help anyway.

 

Try the Fn-Font combo. On my Inspiron 4100 it's the F7 key.
