My computer locks up or reboots in higher end games. I have even taken it to a couple computer shops and nobody can figure out the problem.

    My system:

    Abit NF7 MoBo
    Athlon xp2800
    1 gig DDR RAM
    80 gig HD
    Gforce 6800
    Onboard sound
    Onboard ethernet
Windows xp pro SP1 & SP2 (fresh format and install)

I was told it may be the power or the outlet in my house. I have tried almost every outlet I can, and bought a battery backup. Nothing, and nobody can help me figure out what is. If you have any suggestions or need more info please let me know.

    Thank You
    Mark

My suggestion in the first instance would be t get shot of SP2 as I have had nothing but troble with this on various clients machines.

However if you do nto want to do that i would disable various devices one at a time ie, sound then play the game that crashes etc. and so on.

That may then tell you what is causing the issues.

Have you checked you CPU util while the game is running.

I had the same problem with various apps and found out my soundcard the midi drivers were using up all the util so disables it and all O.K now but as i do nto use any midi on my system it was nto an issue

I have had some people recently have their DVDs freeze, like your games, due to resources, even though their computers were big and bad like yours. My guess is poorly written spyware is messing up your machine. One option which has worked, believe it or not, (these instructions work in windows 2000, XP is a little different) is going to Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> System -> Advanced -> Performance Options and optimizing performance for 'background services.' In addition, reducing your virtual memory, so the initial size and maximum size are 128MB. It has worked to my surprise before, you may wish to give it a shot.

lock ups in higher end games that demand more GPU power is almost a textbook heat issue. Take off the cover to your case and try it. If it doesn't lock up, then you need additional cooling.

Yeah right enough , you could alsop dependant on your motherboard play the game until a crash then check your temp in you BIOS most motherboards I use in PC's will tell you all the temps
