Hello everyone im really stuck and this is getting me down so please could you people with computer knolledge lend me a hand it will be much appriciated.

I recently built a new pc and the graphics card i bought was a gainward 6800 GS, i was using this in my old pc till the new parts came which included a new power supply, a pretty cheap one at 550Wats

In my old pc i was only running a 360 PSU and the card ran fine which im a bit stumped about. But this was a chieftech PSU

Everything seems to be working at the moment apart from the graphics card, i was having loads of problems installing windows getting disk errors so i had to format the hardrive on the other pc so got all that sorted now...

I only put the graphics card in today and it just isnt working atall, windows is fine but when i go to load up a game like battlefeild 2 half way through loading the map the sound goes slightly crackly and it freezes completly. in installed fear and the intro is so jerky and small cloured squares are everywhere and it freezes on the menu...
tryed some 2D games they also freeze

could this be down to a cheap PSU? here is the link to the one i bought...

the thing i was thinking about was that the requirments say on the box '2 free HDD connectors' which i dont have since this powersupply only came with 4 could this be anything to do with it?

Or is this likley to be my motherboard is faulty? my stats are as followed
    P4 3.4ghz 2MB catch 775
    Asus P5P800SE MotherBoard
    3 sticks of 512 ram, 2 at pc2700 - 1 at pc4000
    Gainward 6800 GS AGP

What i also noticed was on the bios my 3.3V under voltage whatever that is, is in red and running at about 2V

if anyone can help thank you so much i have no idea if its the mobo or not since the card was working fine before i changed it.

I'd say it was the ps ......don't know the conversion factor to US currency, but in my neck of the woods, a 550 watt will run @$70.00 US ....and yes, the 3.3v running at 2v is definitely funky!!

That PSU makes me feel physically sick:rolleyes:your trusting hundreds of pounds of video card and cpu to the price of a chinese meal :eek:when the manufacturuer of a supply doesnt advertise the specifications of its own PSU on its own site you know something is up  Iv just been browsing the Novatech forums and came accross this one of their own 'helpers' has asked for specs on their power supplies in january and still no specs so dont hold your breath,I'd return it just on principle

The fact your 3.3 is so low is because of the power needs of a 3.4ghz P4,this is where it gets its juice from, your problems are symptoms of a cpu problem as they are all under high cpu load, this also causes your HD to become corrupt, for your system you need a quality 450w power supply or greater

Welcome to Major Geeks Tom2199, I agree with Rikky's comments, and would add a few; download Everest from MG http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4181 then you can see all the voltages put out by your PSU, and report then back here if you have any future voltage problems.

I would also add that a spare PSU is the cheapest insurance you can have, even the better quality PSU's are inexpensive, and are so easily swapped, same with HD's.

Again Welcome to Major Geeks and like Rikky said "Been there done it"

Novatech are cheap - there's no doubt about it and as such some of their gear isn't of the highest quality. But on the other hand I've built an entire PC with "cheap" components from Novatech and it works just fine (an AMD 3200+ with 2x 80Gb HDD + DVD reader + CD Burner) and that has got an even cheaper 350W PSU so don't always blame the cheap PSU for all your faults (sorry Rikky - I hope you're feeling better :) )

Again Yargwel your taking it totally out of context please stick to the computer at hand,I'll remind you

    P4 3.4ghz 2MB catch 775 not amd 3200+

It also has a video card a 6800gs unlike the one you quoted which doesnt

The specific symptom is a low 3.3 line which points toward a PSU problem,I have no doubt you can build a computer that works from Novatech parts but that doesnt help us get Toms working ;)

    thanks for the welcome :)

it was the PSU, i took out my chieftech 360V (which weighs 10 times heavier) and plugged it all in, f.e.a.r loaded fine...

just need to get myself a better power supply before i start gaming properly

as you can see that cleared up the 3.3v problem

No problem Tom great Stuff, again your right I wouldnt leave that psu in there for any period of time,I also would actually consider reinstalling windows also,CPU corruption can lead to corruption of the OS and future problems, its how some computers become "problem computers"

One way to check for this is to download the software tool sets from the manufacturer of your Harddrive which will check to see if the drive has become corrupt:)
