Determining what type of ram you need

I have an inspiron 6400 T5200 processor with 1GB of RAM. I am not sure what type of RAM I can purchase or what type I need. Does anyone know how to determine this. Dell tech support won't tell me and they only say I have to to talk to sales.

what is the computer?...like...inspiron 2100? what is it?

Download and install this program the system summary will tell you what type of ram and what speed you have installed

You can also open the ram slot on your laptop and read what it says on the chips,if you can buy the same brand you have currently you have the best chance of the ram working together but it isnt essential

Also with either Sisoft SANDRA above or this good scanner from Crucial http://www.crucial.com/systemscanner check to see if you have spare space to add more ram as you "may" only have 2 ram slots and DELL may have used 2x512mb ram modules, thus meaning if you wish to upgrade to 2GB you may have to buy 2x1GB modules and wont be able to use the ram you already have.

so double check you have space to add more ram, the crucial scanner will help with this.

ps. you dont need to buy from Crucial, just their scanner for ram is very good in telling you if you have spare slots and what ram type and speed you have already installed.

Inspiron 6400? Only Inspiron with that model # I am aware of is a laptop. If so, it has two memory slots on the bottom under a removable cover, and it's likely two 512M DDR chips.
