Is anyone else noticing that this new version is sloooooooow and that navigation sucks? You go to a new page and then use the "back" button but there is no "forward" button to get back to the page you were just on.

On top of that, the "phishing" filter seems to dog this thing down to a crawl; and what's this crap with "tabs" anyway?

This seems to be the lousiest version to date. They say it can be uninstalled and I think I will do so -- if that part works -- though I have serious doubts it will.

Has anyone found any virtues whatsoever with this version?

I have to agree, I like the look and I dont have a problem with the navigation but it is very slow. Like you said with the Phishing filter on its almost unusable.

I have tried for it about month now but I think I will be going back to Opera, it is to slow. Tab browsing rocks. At least with Opera I can resume donwloads etc.

Running XPsp2. I disagree with you. I've found functionality and speed enhanced with IE7. Try tweaking your IE or system configuration settings, or look for other causes in your pc. You can certainly turn off or disable the phishing filter if desired. Lousy....is a gross mischaracterization of IE7.

I also have XP sp2 and the new IE sucks out loud.

Why would the navigation and speed in IE6 be just fine and then, upon "upgrading" to IE7 go right in the toilet? The only thing new is the IE7 upgrade.

Why should I, as an end user of a "P&P" system, have to go in and tweak that system every time the author releases a new version?

IMO this is the fastest IE ive ever experienced. Thats what instantly blew me away as I did not expect it to be so responsive and fast. I still prefer Opera, but I find myself clicking on the IE7 icon more than I have in 3 years.

IE7 is excellent until the Phishing filter kicks in, then it can slow to a crawl.

I find that the Phishing filter only bogs the browser down on some pages though so it may be that you are using sites that meet the IE criteria for risky sites.

 Hi Folks just downloaded IE7 2 weeks ago it was soooooooo!! slooooooow!! that i was able to run a shower, get washed, have breakfast, take the dog out, make a few phone calls before my page had loaded:D seems to be settling a wee bit, although i still get lots and lots and lots of error messages so hopefully it will settle in time and i,ll get away with taking the dog out only.

    TaTa for now

Hrmmmm there must be something more to this then if 1/2 of the ppl find it really slow and the 1/2 blazingly quick. I know speed is subject due to PC Specs etc, but im running a fast PC on a fast line with xp sp2 and I couldnt tweak it to run any faster.

I'm still dealing with this "tab" thing. The only thing I can see that it is good for is to have multiple pages open on multiple tabs at the same time. Alt-tab was always good enough for me before; so what good is <tab-alt-tab> next <tab-alt-tab>? On top of that, how do we differentiate one tab from another? Is a page tab "TAB" and the keyboard tab "tab"? What do we use when we are in the middle of a dissertation with someone? Should the above have read "... so what good is <TAB-alt-tab> next <TAB-alt-tab>?"?

Leave it to MS to come up with conflicting terminology.

I would also like to know if anyone else is having this problem with the "forward" and "back" buttons not working. If I use the "back" button, most of the time it simply stays on the same page and doesn't go back to the previous page. If I use the drop down and select a previous page the "forward" button stays grayed out.

    SolarDog Private E-2

Unless you're in a dissertation with a kindygarten class, I really dont see why you're freakin' out about the tabs. I really cant even fathom what you think this confusion would be.

About the forward button, I haven't experienced that..frankly I haven't had a single issue with IE7 yet. Its definitely the best IE Ive experienced. Im not some IE fanatic either, Opera has blown IE out of the water for years now and Firefox has come on really strong in the last year or so.

  11. jimpeel

    jimpeel Sergeant

First of all, it's "kindergarten" not "kindygarten" and I believe that my interrogatory on the subject is not misplaced. Apparently, you do; so any conversation thereon would be moot.

If you are having no problems -- and are deeply satisfied with IE 7 -- why are you here haranguing those who are having problems using terms like "kindygarten"? Do you have any constructive comments or suggestions for us? Simply stating your gleeful satisfaction with the program does us no good whatsoever. We want to be gleefully satisfied also. At this juncture, we aren't.

An example of the "forward" button remaining greyed out would be in hotmail. I go to a message and then hit "back". I cannot then go forward to the page I just left. I have to reselect the page to get there. In some cases, the page simply does not change. It remains the same. I then have to go to the "back" dropdown and select the page I wish to revisit. This was not the case in previous versions of IE.

Dread stated it very well when s/he stated that it was an interesting phenomenon that the split between those experiencing problems (like me) and those extolling the virtues of IE 7 (like you) are just about evenly split.

  12. SolarDog

    SolarDog Private E-2

Wow, you're quite uptight arent you? Kindygarten is a term of endearment, not of ridicule. Unless you state your specs, its gonna be kind of hard to weed your problem out. Sorry I got you all wound up.

    All,

As an aside, and not a complaint, has anyone else discovered one more change that has apparently been written into the program -- no right click "copy" function while creating text.

If I highlight the address in the address bar, I can then right click and get a dropdown menu that includes "copy". However, if I highlight text in this message as I write it and then right click on it the "copy" function is no longer there. I have to use a <ctrl-C> to copy the text. Once I post the message I can then highlight and copy the text.

HOWEVER ... the "paste" function is still there.

I assume that this will be aleviated in the future so I merely mention this in passing as it has a well-known workaround that many people already use in the course of their composing of text.

Jim, I'm running 7.0.7530, and the normal context menu options are there for me (including "Copy"). Might want to keep in mind that if you're creating text within a control (versus a simple html textbox) that control can override the context menu if it's designed to. Also, my BackButton/ForwardButton functionality works exactly the way it's supposed to on my installations. :)

I'm running 7.0.7530 on various XP/Pro SP2 boxes, and speed isn't an issue. I do have an annoying problem with IE crashes when working with sites using PHP... Very annoying. But aside from that (tabs included), I like the new version and it works perfectly for me. :)

My hard drive went ka-ka today so I have reinstalled the original drive that came with the CPU back in 2003. It has all of the old stuff on it including IE 6.0.2900.2180....

Unfortunately, it also lacks all of the appropriate upgrades including sp2. Hi-ho, hi-ho ... <crap>.

I guess that takes care of this problem for me. I won't be reloading IE 7 again very soon.

    Thanks for the help, guys.

I find one of the most unhelpful answers in the forum is when a poster writes, well, I'm not having that problem. What help is that?

There are many people who have started threads in here with regard to issues they're having with IE7. Why there is such an incredibly defensive reaction by people who are NOT having problems with IE7, I don't know. Taken at a non-emotional perspective, there must be some differences in people's computers and in the websites they're visiting which are leading to these different experiences, positive or negative.

    My two-cents worth.

I marvel at your logic. :D

Or there's always the highly entertaining angle of whining about wanting something upgraded, then whining even louder when it is and you can't figure it out.

I figure the imperfections are part of the early developmental phase we're in for the computer age. When all is perfect, it will not be as interesting anymore.

"Add/Remove Programs" in Control Panel will allow you to uninstall IE7 - in order to find and uninstall it, be sure to have the "show updates" box checked before you scroll down looking for it.

IE7 is also wrecking havoc with some older XP drivers and programs. I had to roll back after discovering (through two days of e-mail ping-pong with HP) that the drivers and software for my ScanJet 4670 will not work with IE7 (PS:If you're having issues with this, ignore HP's "ALT+SPACE" advice - it's useless. Just roll back to IE6 and cut your losses).

For those who love or hate IE 7 there is an option to join MS's user input so you can let them know your likes and dislikes. The offer comes when you upgrade and there is also a way to get to it after you upgrade. I ran into it but can't remember how right now and I no longer have IE 7 installed so can't investigate it for this thread.

Perhaps someone else can post that info.

  27. SoloTraveller

For myself, there's no defensiveness whatsoever; in the case of this thread, I posted my experiences with IE7 just to provide some input to show that what some are claiming as terrible problems with IE7 I haven't noticed in any of my installations, home or work. I think it harms the whole support issue when someone posts in a thread like this something along the lines of "Have you noticed that this feature or that feature doesn't exist anymore?" when what they're stating as fact just isn't true. Post it as a question, and you'll get input. Post it as fact, and you're bound to get corrected.

No defensiveness here at all. I know which browser is better. ;)

I have gone back to using Opera. The biggest annoyance for me was downloading. I also found the dowload dialogue box very slow to pop up after selecting a file to download.

Shame becuase I liked the look and feel of IE7 but it was just to slow, it was like I was running a 256mb dl line all the time. Hopefully after a few patches it might sort it out, unless there is a conflict with my firewall or antivrus.

Even this statement you make is defensive. The original problems were stated clearly, albeit with some annoyance and frustration. The newly installed IE7 was running slowly, the navigation wasn't working and the forward button didn't work. If your own experience is that he had mistakes in his post, then imnsho it would be better to simply tell him what to do to correct whatever is leading to these problems.

Thanks for saying what i could not put into words Solo!

I did not want to contribute to this thread simply because of the facts that you have pointed out here, and also that i can not understand why people are having these problems with IE7 and therefore i am unable to offer any constructive help!

Yes i am grumpy, and i am tired of the knockers....go get firefox if your not happy, but please....stop the whining!

There's one for your 'most unhelpful answers thread'

We have all seen these IE7 threads done to death, and not once have i seen the reply....thanks for your help, all is now fixed and im loving my new IE7 experience!
Anyone ever bothered to think why?
Thats because there is no easy fix for what people are experiencing, it could be a million and one things that are causing them the problems and it is extremely frustrating i know, but taking out these frustrations on the browser or MS themselves is not going to solve anything.
I have tested many beta versions of this browser and i am currently using the version thats bundled with vista 5744 with huge smile on my face.

I know this doesn't help anyones cause for the problems that they may be having, but guys, there is no magical fix. The most helpful thing i can think of to advise you is if the browser is not working for you.....try another one!

There is no other software developer on earth that has the money to pour into their software development as MS do.....surely they have got things right and maybe, just maybe, it is your own personal, or system inabilities that are the root cause of all this evil!

My apologies to anyone i may have offended....I had my 2 cents, and now i am off to bed!

    Goodnight all and sweat dreams!

You know something, these IE7 beefs are eerily similar to the beefs from IE6, 5, 4, 3 etc. But, even with numerous alternatives out there, people continue to use it and MS has a deathgrip on marketshare. You know why? People are hesitant of change, and only the select can improvise, overcome and adapt. ;)

MS' task is simple: there are likely 400 million-plus computers out there, no two are exactly alike, user experience levels differ greatly, from the supreme geek to the uninformed moron and MS is expected to write something that works on every single system without question. Is their product perfect? Of course not. But Toyotas get flat tires too. :)

Just use Firefox or Opera and keep IE6 for checking e-mails on messengers people! Seems like everyones having problems with this piece of &%#%$*. I couldn't even get it to run. Check my own thread and see my problem... I couldn't even get it to load a single page, after installing it I went to the homepage and seen my google, than I typed in a website address and all it did was give me a message that popped up saying "could not run or find the active activation". & it wouldn't even let me go on any page. That message popped up like an error message, and no it did not say error... It was in its own little pop up window. I couldn't go on any site, I had to uninstall it. I dunno what's wrong.

Seems like MORONSOFT, oh excuse me I meant MICROSOFT is getting lazy with their development. Let's face it, they're running out of ideas. They have enough money and are in no need of really changing the computer world. they do it out of neccessity to keep their boring rich lives steady going on yacts and trips around the world searching for diamonds. They could care less after all they've accomplished. It's just like your favorite musician... They don't stay hot forever because they run out of ideas at some point and become neutral.

If someone could help me get this IE7 to work (since I have not experienced it at all), please go to my thread. My thread is called:

Windows Xp Internet Explorer 7 Update (Acting Very Funny - IE7 IS NOT WORKING!)

I WOULD LIKE TO TRY IE7 BEFORE I KEEP COMPLAINING... LOL. SO SOMEONE PLEASE HELP SINCE I HAVEN'T EVEN TRIED IT YET. ALL I'VE HEARD IS YOUR COMMENTS. SO PLEASE GO TO MY THREAD AS I WON'T BE CHECKING THIS ONE.

Yeah, that was a mature thing to post.

If you don't like it, or don't know enough to be able to make it work, why not just use FireFox? I'd wager that you already have it installed, as do most of the others complaining about it, so why bother? Just use FireFox and be happy with your choice.

Don't bother. Stick with FireFox or Opera. You'll be happier, since those browsers NEVER have any problems. :)
