Ok, for the last 3 months my computer keeps getting BSoD's about 3 - 4 times a day....

Windows error reports that there is a device conflict and so does windows debugger (debugging the memory dumps)

But in device manager there is no sign of any device conflicts.... i just can't think what it might be =/

    any ideas?

ok, i beleive this to be the sound card now as i have just had it uninstalled all day and no crashes.....

I did try disabling the onboard sound b4 but that didnt work.... do i also have to disable codecs etc and game ports?

Is your main sound onboard or are you using an add-on PCI sound card?

If so what type is the add-on cards make and model number/version?

If its not then what is the make and model of your motherboard?

Which Operating System and is it fully upto date with all service packs and updates?

sorry for all the questions but they will help in diagnosis of the fault, hopefully ;)

my main sound is a PCI card, the onboard is not recognised in windows for some odd reason.... (although it works in dos). The soundcard is a soundblaster... model - not sure.. but it was around £20 bout 2 years ago.

Running Win XP SP2 - however not fully up to date... but i cant see how that would cause much of a problem

Is your onboard set to disable in the Bios? or is their a dip switch disable for onboard on the mobo?

In the event viewer does it list a cause?

I would be uninstalling the driver for the PCI card, making sure the onboard was disabled, then rebooting and installing the drivers for the PCI card again, even down to moving the PCI card to another PCI slot as a test.

Reason I ask about the OS and service packs is major service packs do bring many fixes not just for the security aspests but your at SP2 and I cannot remember seeing anthing relating to sound since then.

the sound card wasn't causing any problems when i uninstalled it. (i also have disabled it in bios and disabled the midi in bios too). But as soon as i reinstalled i got the problems again.......

Im also having BSOD's being caused by the graphics drivers.... (the latest ones cause more crashes) and the ones that come with the card still cause crashes but less frequently.

I also have all the memory dumps associated with these if that might help....

    ok update:

have used device cleaner pro and totally fixed my gcard problem....

Now its just the sound card... if the problem is the same with the gcard then its a lil trickier..

After totally cleaning all the sound card drivers from my system and rebooting... windows automatically tries to install drivers for the sound card which do not work. I am assuming that after i install the main sound dreivers the ones that windows installed are still there and therefor are causing conflicts.....

    My question is:

Does anyone know how to stop windows from automatically trying to install drivers?.... quite annoying.

Or even a solution to this?

    thank you ^_^

Yes this does sound a bit tricker... have you tried to boot into Safe Mode once you have removed the drivers, then install the ones you want?

or using device manager remove the sound card from the list then goto Add New Hardware and follow the wizard to install new hardware until it gets to the point of automatically searching and installing drivers at this point choose manually locate/have disk and browse for the location of the driver on the cd or download you have.

While not the hardware you need installing is listed here, however the locations of the menus and how to manually install are.
