DEVICE IOS ERROR: installing NERO

When i install the NERO software for my new A-Open CD burner, upon rebooting i get this message :"When initializing device IOS: Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer" and get stuck in a reboot loop until i enter "safe mode with network support" and remove the software. Then everything fine.

Nero actually doesn't allow me update the OEM version, it only allows as low as version 3. I've tried intalling without anti-virus and in safe mode.

Anyone know any programs available for download on this site that would help or any ideas on how to solve this problem?

I used the "SYSTEM INFORMATION" program to create the following text file but it doesn't include programs that might be relevant and doesn't mention my Geforce2 MX video card or any of my drivers!!? If someone can recomend a more helpful info tool i wiil repost another one. Also mention any info the info tool generates that i should edit out for security purposes.

ok if im understanding what your saying the problem you are having is installing the bundled nero software
firstly have you tried any other burning software and does this cause any issues
secondly how have you got the burner installed is it master or slave
and lastly does the drive work normally without nero installed ie:can it read cds etc

    better explanation:

After installing NERO it asks me to reboot. During reboot i get this message:

"While initializing device IOS: Windows protection error. You
    need to restart computer."

Rebooting will take me to the "start-up" menu where I can choose "Safe-mode
with command prompt only" or "Safe Mode with Network Support" or "Command
prompt Only" . Choosing anything else LOOPS me back to the error message. In
"Safe Mode with network support" i can unistall Nero to get my system back
    to normal.

    Answer to questions:
The drive does work fine as a CD rom , i can read files from other cd's off it, allthough i can't get it to play audio cd's right off the drive like i can with my normal cd-rom. (Winamp will play the songs as if it's working but no sounds comes out).

The burner is set to MASTER and connected at the end of the IDE cable with
the normal CD rom set to Slave at the middle connector.

No i haven't tried any other cd-burning drives/software. I was going to post another thread asking if i can download any others off the net for FREE, and if so wich would be the best to try.

But anyway, I deleted nero and downloaded the free deepburner from MG (Same as KODO's posted link) seem's to work good so far,The basic's is some what similar to nero's Try it.

As for my problem with nero dont know yet suspect compatibility issues with my old cdrw or maybe program??

Have you tryed to uninstall and reinstall your nero

I had this problem after updating windows media player. The computer would not even boot except into safe mode. I removed the adaptec codec from the new media player then everything worked fine. Don't know if this is your problem but it could be a conflict between the 2 which is causing the problem. Hope this helps.

    remove codec?

Hey, kilowatt , How do i find and remove the adaptec Codec from my Media Player?

And when i go to the DeepBurner page to downlaod , I notice that it is for CD AND DVD. is it safe to use a program for both on a drive that only burn's cd's?

One last little question: isn't NERO supposed to be my CD/RW's driver or just a burning program? Does WIn98 come with drivers for cd burners automatically, 'cause i thought i had to intall the driver and just assumed it was NERO. confused:)

Inability to play songs directly off the disk is NOT working fine as a CD-ROM drive. Can you play music directly with any app? If not, open up the properties for that drive & make sure "Enable digital CD audio from this CD-ROM device" is checked. Burning software frequently has trouble with a drive that it can't read digitally. Lets make sure the drive is fully functional before tackling the Nero software.

If you've never had Roxio/Adaptec burning software installed, you don't have that on your computer, and that's not the problem.

Yes, software that can burn both CDs & DVDs is fine; you just can't burn DVDs on yours.

Yes, if Nero software comes bundles with your drive, that should be the driver for burning. Win98 doesn't support burning all by itself.

Win98... Come to think of it, I don't recall Win98 supporting digital audio through the IDE cable. Did you install the skinny audio cable between the drive and your sound card (or to the motherboard if you've got onboard sound)? And in Win98, don't enable digital music unless you've got the second SPDIF digital signal cable attached as well (some drives don't have the digital jack on the back, and most don't come with the special SPDIF cable). And is DMA enabled in the drive's properties? That may not be done automatically in Win98.

If you have downloaded a newer version of Media Player go to control panel, add remove programs and select the media player click remove and it should give you an option of removing all or part select (very fuzzy here it's be awhile) but if you select partial it will list what parts to uninstall select the adaptec plugin or codec click remove and then try rebooting and see if this fixes it. On an old Compaq it would not even boot until this was removed. Hope this helps. BTW I don't remember when the Media player started coming with this add on I think around version 7.:)

Sorry for responding late, shared computer, responding to G.T:

A: As for my question about wether the Nero is supposed to be a driver, meant to specifie
is it the driver I NEED to install before trying freeware buring program such as DeepBurner , or is DeppBurner also a drvier also a burning "driver."

B: I did connect a skinny audio cable into my Soundblaster audio card from my cd-burner when i first installed the burner and got no sound. Then tried it whithout the cable. The drive currently has no cable. I couldn't find "Enable digital CD audio from this CD-ROM device" check box in the properties window of that drive in the device manager but see "DMA" unchecked , should i check it or would it not make a difference if there's no audio cable. Could i have put the audio cable in wrong? like upside down or backwards 'cause i noticed you could put it in four different ways.

C: As for the whole Media player adaptec/Roxio problem, is responed to KILLOWAT's suggestion of trying to uninstall just the ROXIO but ended up unistalling whole program,
whenprogram saw "roxio" falsh by during installation......long story short, i'm still working on that. Will try a few more things and repost tomorrow.

Both Nero and DeepBurner are software programs, not drivers per se, but each program installs files that tells Windows how to interact with your cd burner. Media player currently installs a file from Adaptec to do that (which I didn't know until this thead :D). Having more than one instruction set for the same hardware can confuse things, and cause a conflict, which is probably what happened with the Adaptec files in Media Player for Kilowatt & the others that mentioned it. If you're going to use either Nero or DeepBurner, they should work without any other additions, or drivers.

Sorry. It's been a while since I used Win98. It doesn't have the checkbox there for digital sound. Don't worry about that. But it IS important to have DMA enabled on the drive for your burning software to work properly, and should be enabled for both of your cd drives. The drives will work without it, but will be slower, which is not critical for data transfer, but can mess up burning. Do enable that. If Windows won't let you enable it, go into BIOS & make sure DMA is enabled there for those drives. (Should be enabled for your hard drives as well for better performance; you might want to check those as well.) The thin audio cable should work in any of the 4 combinations, as the two outer wires carry the left & right hot signals, and the two black middle wires carry the two ground signals. Only confusion is getting right & left channels where they're supposed to be. If you identify right channel content coming from left speaker, reverse ONE of the plugs to reverse the stereo image. The audio cable IS necessary for CD sound in Win98. You need that. Your Live! soundcard should have three 4-pin plugs that fit that audio cable. Marked CD, AUX, & TAD if I remember correctly. CD & AUX are identical and useable, the only difference is which slider in the Creative mixer controls which level. I don't know what the TAD connection was, but if you had the audio cable plugged into that one, that may have been your problem. Re-install the cable, making sure you get it in either CD or AUX, then check the level sliders in the Creative mixer.

If you decide on DeepBurner, you may not need to remove the Adaptec files, as the conflict is likely just between the Nero & Adaptec software. If you want to use Nero, keep working on that one. ;)

For anyone else reading I re-installed the sound cable and it didn't work. Then I looked i the "CREATIVE" section of my programs list and chose "Sound balster live" and then "restore defaults" then the cd-burner drive could play audio CD's. So that problem is solved.!!

Rather than figure out the NERO problem and deal with Microsoft's support pages (Clear booting? no thanks) I downloaded DeepBurner(DB) and installed and opend the program with NO "device IOS ERROR"'s poping up. so far so good but......

When i try to burn a cd in DB it fails to see my drive when 'initializing ASPI' or something and says "no drives found" . The DB support forum only says 2 things 1: uncheck the ASPI intializing thingy which i tried and made no difference and 2: make sure your drivers are loaded. When i check the burners properties in the device manager, and check the drivers tab it says:

"No driver files are required or have been loaded for this device. To update the driver files for this device, click Update Driver."

Then when i click "update driver" (connected to the net) it says something like "this device allready has the best drivers for this device" So the device manager is contradicting itself as wether or not the burner has drivers. How do i know and where do get drivers for my bruner?

Which brings me back to NERO (groan). Checking the "Nero" disk that came with my burner it has 4 programs: Nero Express, Nero Media player., InCD and EasyWrite reader. None of wich are described as drivers.

    Any ideas?

OK, first, "drivers" are hardware specific, not software specific. The software may complain that it isn't finding a driver, or that there is a problem with a driver, but generally that driver should be from the hardware manufacturer, if Windows doesn't install a suitable driver on its own. CD burners have advanced a LOT since Win98 came out, and while Windows drivers are just fine for a generic CD-ROM drive, your burner may need a specific one that Win98 does not have. Does Device Manager identify your burner as a standard CD drive, or as a CD-R recorder?

Check the manufacturer's website and see if they have any drivers available to download, specifically for Windows 98. If Windows thinks your drive is a standard player, the burning software doesn't think you've got a burner installed.

[edit] I nosed around A-Open's site, and you should be able the grab the driver for your model here:

Wow you where right. The device manager says "DEVICE TYPE: CD-ROM" not CD-R.

Thanks alot for finding that download page for me. But is there any reason you picked that page for me. Wich driver am i supposed to get? I have an" A-Open 52x CD-R/RW''' there's no product number like "CR1420C" if you look at the link you gave me, you'll notice that in the search bar there's a drop down menu of numbers to chose from. They all seem to have different drivers. Should i take the one that says "CDRW123A" from the page you gave me or do i need to find my 'model number'.

Basically i need reasurance that you know that's the righ tdrive for me or how you figured that out. :)

Thanks alot for your help. Rob

No, the driver showing is just what came up as default when I found the driver area for CD-RW drives. You choose your model from the drop-down box top-center of the page. 52x CD-R/RW is a description, not your model number. Box or paperwork that came with it should show the actual model number somewhere, and it's probably on the label on the drive itself, although I'm sure you don't want to take it out again just to check. :D
