After installing XP Pro sp2 update I am having a few problems. One of the problems is Device Manager is blank. I have found a few remedies for this problem an so far nothing has worked. The remedies I have found and tried so far are:

    1. Plug & Play service must be set to automatic. I have gone into SafeMode and disabled Plug & Play. I have gone back into normal mode and set it to automatic. I re-booted after that of course.
    2. You must be logged on as a local administrator to perform this task:

    1. Go to "Start", "Run", and enter "regedt32"
    2. Maximize the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" window.
    3. Scroll down to "SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum"
    4. With "Enum" selected click the "Edit", "Permissions" menu.

Note: At this point you will probably notice there are no permissions on this key.

    5. Click "Add".
    6. Add the group "Everyone" and the user "SYSTEM".
    7. Select "Everyone" and check "Read" ONLY!
    8. Select "SYSTEM" and check "Full Control".
    9. Click the "Advanced" button at the bottom of the window.
    10. On the Advanced window check "Reset permissions on all child objects..."
    11. Click "OK"
    12. On the warning window click "Yes"
    13. Close REGEDT32

    3. I have gone to this MS article:
    http://support.microsoft.com/KB/914450
and requested the fix. I requested an earlier fix, received it and it didn't fix the problem. This supersedes the fix I applied.
    4. Go to Kelly's Korner, scroll down to line 107 and in the right-hand column, click on "Restore Device Manager," to download a small .reg file.

Once downloaded, run it according to the directions at the top of the Kelly's Korner page.
    5. Windows Update.
    6. I have run the AproposFix ver. 1.1 in safe mode.
    7. The version of umpnpmgr.dll is 5.1.2600.2744
    8. Device Manager is blank in safe mode also.

    Any Ideas?

    Thank you,

I have completed all recommendations at:
    http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winxp/1134095035

I updated the definitions in normal mode.
I have run Spybot in safe mode. I found Virtumonde again. I have had a hard time removing this.

I tried running Ad-Aware 2007 in safe mode. I get an error:
"Exception EAccessViolation in module Ad-Aware2007.exe at 001C852C.

I ran Ad-Aware SE Pro ver.1.06r1 in safe mode. Nothing found.
I ran VundoFix.exe in safe mode. Nothing found.
I ran VirtumundoBeGone.exe in safe mode. Nothing found.
I ran SuperAntiSpyware.exe in safe mode. Nothing found.
I did remove malware prior to updating to SP2. This is the link:

    Any more ideas?

I have download and run a fix from MS to resolve this matter.

    WindowsXP-KB914450-v2-x86-ENU.exe

I am getting an error when I run the fix. The error is:
"You account do not have enough permissions to manipulate registry rights. Please contact your administrator."

I copied that directly from the window. They are not my spelling errors.

I have tried running this from the Administrator account. I have tried going into the registry and adding Administrator to
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet
    and in Permisions, Advanced selecting
Replace permission entries on all child objects with entries shown here that apply to child objects.

I have also added Administrator to
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM
    and in Permisions, Advanced selecting
Replace permission entries on all child objects with entries shown here that apply to child objects.

I have tried running this in SafeMode.
I am still getting the same error.

    Any ideas?

    Thank you,

Post edited; my advice was another cleanup endeavor. Sorry, I thought you were still at the removal stage.
If you still need to remove Virtumonde, try a trial of CounterSpy
    http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Home-Home-Office/Anti-Spyware/

This is what one person posted at annoyances.org because none of the other fixes worked for him.

Thanks for the post. I ran CounterSpy again. It didn't find anything. I have no idea how this PC keeps getting infected. The first time I ran the SP2 update from normal mode I ran the Windows Update right after and discovered Device Manager blank and Network Connections blank. After working with MS for 3 days the last thing that fixed that problem was an XP repair install. I still had numerous problems so I restored the drive back to SP1 with a Ghost backup. Then MS recommended I run the SP2 update from Safe Mode with the SP2 download on the hard drive. (not from CD) After the SP2 update Device Manager was populated and Network connections was showing. I did the Windows update and found Device Manager blank along with Network connections. I ran an XP repair install. This time there were less errors to fix.

    Thanks for the suggestions.
