I recently installed a 120 GB USB2.0 HD as well as a USB 2.0 card (ALI PCI to USB Open Host Controller), and want to make sure the HD is using USB 2.0 and not USB 1.1
I am trying to resolve some video capture problems (dropped frames) and checked the system properties hardware device manager and found that there are two listings under Universal Serial Bus Controllers.

The first one was expanded and had the following sublistings

ALI PCI to USB Open Host Controller
ALI PCI to USB Open Host Controller
ALI PCI to USB Open Host Controller
    Intel(r) 82801 BA/BAM USB Universal Host Controller 2442
    Intel(r) 82801 BA/BAM USB Universal Host Controller 2444
    USB Mass Storage Device
    USB Root Hub
    USB Root Hub
    USB Root Hub
    USB Root Hub
    USB Root Hub

The second Universal Bus Controllers heading contained the following sublistings

ALI PCI to USB Open Host Controller
    USB Root Hub

Do the two USB Controller listings AND all the duplicate entries in the first in the device manager seem normal?
If it doesn't, what should I do to correct all the duplications?

    Thanks for your help

The duplicate entires are normal. Usually, there's one controller device for every two physical USB ports (or connector for two ports) and one root hub for every controller. So that's not unusual at all.

I've never seen a duplicate second Universal Bus Controllers heading, but without knowing your OS and the brand and model of your USB card (not just the name of the chip they used) I can't really be of much help.

    hey idreos-
did you ever figure this out? i have 2 usb controller headings in the device manager after installing the ali 2.0 pci card. one contains "open host controllers" and "usb root hub"s while the other heading contains the 2.0 root hub and enhanced host controller. for some v annoying reason all the traffic (even from devices plugged into the new 2.0 card) is going through the slow (not 2.0/enhanced) controller.
