DHCP and DNS not working on XP Home

problem:
1. DNS lookup won't work, but ping ip works for internal and external addresses.
2. DHCP won't work, but PC comes up ok with manually configured ip address

configuration:
xp home sp1
realtek ethernet card
dsl connection via belkin router

I manually configured the TCP/IP to bypass the DHCP problem. I tried resetting the router, and the PC but would not DHCP. Other PC's on the router work fine with DHCP. I am focussing on the DNS problem for the moment.

DNS troubleshooting so far..
1. ping 66.240.90.45 works but
2. ping www.yahoo.com does not work
3. hosts file had redirects but I removed them all except for :
127.0.0.1 localhost
4. situation exists for both safe mode with networking or normal
5. I have another XP PC connected to the same router, and it works fine.
same DNS settings on both
6. Everything looks normal with ipconfig /all
7. DNS service has been restarted (set to auto)

There is lots of spyware and had viruses on this pc, so it's possible something killed the DNS.

i had tried doing some other stuff prior to this fix, without success:

1. ipconfig /renew

complained about not having appropriate device to operate on

2. netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt

completed, but had no postive effect.

do you know why the problem is caused ? is it because of spyware/virus infection ?

Yes, it is typically virus / spyware related. I've seen this most often with Dialer Trojans.
So you may want to read this.

I had the same problem with my XP Home game. I googled for half an hour (on another computer) and found the solution!
