I have the worst problem to diagnose, router intermittently stops working. The lights flash as per normal but there's no connection and I can't get into the admin panel either. It's now happening about once a day and the only way to get connectivity back is to cycle the power. Oh, my open ports and all other settings are not lost. Any thoughts on how to diagnose this? Thanks for your time.

What happens when you try to access the admin panel? Are you using a wired or wireless connection to your router?

When trying to access the admin panel I get a regular 404 page and the router is wired to my PC.

Are you saying the login panel does not appear, or that it appears but you can't get logged on with your username and password?

It just gives the standard IE blurb of site not found, check your connections etc. I could not get to the admin panel at all. Standard error page for IE browser not finding a site. After a power cycle, everything is back to normal until next time it goes out. Always the same behaviour.

Has the frequency of this problem been increasing or does it stay about the same? Is the router still under warranty? Can you use their Technical Support Options?

After you power cycle the router get your Internet connection re-established, can you access your router admin panel?

No warranty, did the FAQ, yes the frequency is increasing and yes I can access the admin panel as per normal after the power cycle. I guess I'll try to e-mail them, it's usually quicker and better support here than many companies I've tried to get answers from.

Yes, see if you can get some assistance from them. I have a DI-524 but I haven't encountered the problem. However, the behavior you described sounds similar to the previous router I owned, a D-Link DI-604. In that case, I concluded it was hardware (router) failure and that's when I got the DI-524. As nearly as I can recall, the DI-604 was about 3 years old, or maybe a little older, when I replaced it.

Thanks for your time, I'll post back if and when I get an answer. Mine is going on 2.5 yrs. but I expect a go/no-go as far as hardware is concerned. Anyways, it's the cheapest router I could find ATT, and it was compatible with my Dell laptop card, bought it from Dell, though I'll spend some extra bucks this time to get a better router if needed. Thanks again.

OK, I may have/hope nailed this one down. It may be my UPS as today my power went off/on/off/on in quick succesion, took less than a second, and I lost the router again. After doing the power cycle to get it back up I unplugged/ replugged the UPS but I wasn't fast enough to duplicate the event, However yesterday, the router just went out without any power event, just went. I'll change the socket it's plugged in and see what happens. It's a half decent UPS, Ultra 1025VA. Thanks for your time USAFveteran.

Update: I haven't switched the socket yet and this time when the electricity went down a couple of times longer than a second apart, nothing happened to the router. It's the quick succession in under a second that does it by forcing the UPS to kick into battery power too quickly. Well, I'm not changing either component as both are only 2 years old. I'll live with it.

Interesting, and good observation there. You probably saved yourself from further frustration you would have experienced if you had bought a new router and the same thing happened.

Your observation makes sense now that I think about it. I have a UPS but don't have my router on it; the router is on a surge protector. I've had sporadic occurrences of the router losing it's connection. In my area, we seem to have brief but noticeable power fluctuations like you mentioned. I think it's sometimes attributable to construction of new buildings going on in the area and when power lines are being installed, fluctuations may occur.

This hasn't happened often enough here to be major annoyance but I may try connecting my router to my UPS. My UPS is an APC Back-UPS ES 500.

    augiedoggie...
you're not alone in this problem... I'm suffering the same problem in a very specific situation: when I try top use the 4 ports of LAN.
The router allows me to use just 3 ports, this is happening once a week ago after using DI-524 for over a year.
If I connect the fours ports we use at home router lights get weaker, connection to the net is lost, and it's not possible to get connected to DI-524 control panel... then I have to remove the cable of one port, disconnect router power and when reconnected DI-524 get recovered to normal.
I did ask to D-LInk support and they asked me to install latest firmware 2.04 but the problems is the same.
