Diagnosing XP Lockups, During Shutdown.

Hey Guys/Gals,

I need some help. I am trying to figure out what is causing my computer to lockup sometimes when I shut down. I get the XP shutdown noise, and a black screen but it just sits there and I have to hit the reset button.

It doesn't always happen, it's sporadic. I am running the latest drivers and firmware. Happens OCed and stock.

 

I am wondering if there is some piece of software that can log during a shut down to figure out what is hanging up on. I tried looking at event viewer but didn't find anything really.

 

Shutdown problems normally indicate hardware conflicts (if not Roxio/Easy CD induced). I normally start by working my way through WINDOWS XP SHUTDOWN & RESTART TROUBLESHOOTING.

 

I do not know if this is worth a word but,I found that zone alarm is bossie.
I had big time troubles until I found it was Z A.I had a hard time getting it off.
I get a window wanting me to buy and put it back on every now and than.

I have learned a few things the hard way.Lock up or freeze that was my problem,and it was Z.A.

I am not a geek just a great granny learning.If I say something stupid please
over look it.

 

I disabled HPET High Precision Event Timer In the bios. I remembered this caused some issues with linux in the past. I am running XP until the new Linux Mint 7 comes out.

This seems to have fixed the issues, it hasn't hung up since then.
