    Hello Major geeks,

My problem was I could not update windows on two computers. I tried all of microsoft's ideas. Then came here and reading old messages saw the suggestion for dial a fix.

I installed and ran it on first computer. Worked perfectly. I was able to download updates.

Tried on second computer. After I downloaded it, I clicked on it to run it, computer jams to the point I have to hold the power key down until the power goes off. I have repeated this several times. :-o

    Got any ideas?

This can happen when other system files are corrupt or have been replaced or removed by malware or some other 3rd party interference. You can try using the System File Checker: click Start, click Run, type cmd and press Enter; in the DOS-type window that opens, type sfc /purgecache and press Enter; then type sfc /scannow and press Enter. This can take time and requires that your XP install disc be in the CD drive so files can be restored from the CD if needed. Also, if you have your XP disc, you could just perform a safe repair install (use the steps at this link) and that should fix the problem. However, if the problem is malware related, then you should probably visit the Malware Forum after reading this guide to malware removal.

    Good luck!

(all this assumes that you're running Dial-A-Fix on Windows XP or Win2000, if trying it on Vista, you will have problems as it is not Vista compatible)
