I don't know what the heck I did, but the Dial Connection window shows up each time I start or shut down my pewter. I haven't downloaded anything new & can't find what might be calling for a connection. Any ideas what might be causing this? I'm running Win98SE. Thanks

    Hi, Muskie!

Try this first, and if it doesn't stop this nonsense, we can try other things.
Open the Internet Options panels, and on the Connections tab, under the white panel, if the dot isn't next to Never, put it there. Apply OK and reboot and see.

Have you installed new software since it last behaved itself?

    What's your firewall?

(You know the drill on all this stuff. What do YOU think is doing it?)

I clicked "Never" like you suggested & it stopped it, but now when I launch IE I have to connect manually. I never had to do that before. I haven't installed anything new lately. I am running Norton Personal Firewall.

I've checked my "Connections" and haven't changed anything there in years. This just started happening last week after I ran SpyBot, Adaware, SpeedDisk, & Defrag.

I thought I knew the drill on this stuff, but it's got me stumped. ;)

Hey ol' buddy, thanks for the reply. That box wasn't checked so I guess I'll have to go figure. :)

Muskie, I'm thinking your "thing" might turn out to be just as bizarre as xflat's. Clearly, my first "fix" wasn't what you needed, so better put that back as it was.

Do you have a startup manager? If you have one (Startup CPL is a good one, but the standalone executable version, not the Control Panel installation), that's a good place to start. See whether anything new is in there. If you don't have one already, you're welcome to take this one. Just unzip it, put the executable in a folder of your choice, and run it. It doesn't "install" anything. Or if you prefer and are easy with msconfig, check that and shut down startups in turn to see what is triggering the dial-up attempt.

Oh yes, make sure that Automatically synchronize isn't checked in your Adjust Date/Time panels (right click the clock, Adjust).

(I'm gonna sleep on't, and hope somebody else comes by and solves the mystery before I see the forum again in the morning. G'luck.)

    I haven't changed any settings at all, so I don't think that's it. I'm googling too. :(

muskybob, I have the same problem and I run Me. I had to set the click to never also and now have to connect manually. So maybe once you get the drill fixed, I can fix mine too

    Bob,

Did you try a startup manager, to see whether you can isolate what is making it pop up?

The advantage of the manager is that it shows the registry Run and Run Once keys and any boot files as well as progs, and lets you temporarily stop any of your startups to do a trial run, then reset everything as it was with a single click and a reboot.

I'm running Win98SE and have come upon a similar problem a few months ago. It showed up after installing an update for ZoneAlarm Pro and Diskeeper. Luckily, ZA indicated which program wanted to connect. It was (the notorious) rpcss.exe.
To disable it restart in DOS, go to Windows\System and rename rpcss.exe to rpcss.ex_ (this way you can restore it in case of problems).
Other OS's require this file to run properly.

Did that and it did not help, but it also created the file again. Somehow????

Muskie, I'm wondering whether there was an update to your Norton Firewall that switched autocheck-for-updates on. I use ZA, and the recent updates all turned autocheck on without asking for permission.

Your firewall launches at boot and is a late program to close when you shutdown.

Have you tried opening the configuration settings for the firewall and checking to see whether it's set to check for updates automatically? (It shouldn't be. It could kick in at bad times and mess up downloads and such. You can do update checks periodically when you do housekeeping, and they'll be under your control.)

    Worth a check?

It could be LiveUpdate but there is an issue with Norton Internet Security/Firewall and similarly Norton Anti-virus in that it checks for a suppliers certificate. See http://service1.symantec.com/Support/nav.nsf/docid/2002012513283206 for details and also here http://forums.techguy.org/t128537/s74c1ae9d0bd0a5157a566fad5035168c.html where I discussed the problem and found the resolution. I had this problem when the process ccApp was causing the dial-up connection dialog to show. You only need to check the certificate revocation settings off (which poses a security risk in my opinion).

Like you I didn't like changing the connection settings to Never and in fact I have this set at "Dial whenever a network connection is not present", which appears to work That is displays the connection dialog when you launch a browser such as Internet Explorer or e-mail such as Outlook Express.

One thing you can do is to look at the Firewall logs to determine which program is causing the dial-up connection dialog to be displayed.

OK, I checked my firewall log after my system started and the connection went thru. I didn't open the browser, but the connection went to http://cri.verisign.com/Class3SoftwarePublishers.crl according to the log. Now what? There's nothing in my start up that says anything of the sort. I've been fooling with this thing since 4PM.

OK, that's the Norton firewall, then.
Well, Bob, there are two choices until Norton gets this all straightened out, according to the Symantec site (you really shd see the link Maxwell pointed you to -- the one that ends in ...206 -- everybody else under the sun who has anything Norton loaded seems to have seen it by now): ;) (Kidding!!)

Do what I suggested in my first post, which leaves you with having to manually connect when you open IE; OR
UN-check "Check for publisher's certificate revocation" in the Security section of the Advanced tab list in Internet Options.

You might try hope (prayer?) that the whole mess will be cleared up soon, and check the Symantec site for news frequently.

    That's it, my friend.

(Actually, there's a third choice: leave it the way it is. But that's hardly acceptable.)

Thanks a lot Wisewiz, both you and Maxwell have been a great help and very patient I might add :) I'm going to check out the site right now & see what it has to say. I'll leave it on manual for now. Hopefully they'll get this straightened out soon. Thanks again everyone. ;)

    Thanks, robo.
