Dial-up Acclerater

Heyyy, my friend's stuck on dialup and he keeps getting dissconnected from battlefield 1942, even when we're only playen 4 people! He connects at 36-ish, shouldent it be connecting at 56? I'ma noob to dialup btw, so I dunno much.... Yea anyway, whats the best "dial-up accelerater"? Thanks.

In truth NO, the max that a 56k modem could get is 56k but in reality the best connection speeds are normally around 49-52k, when on DUN mine was 49.9k constantly, but that was with a dedicated phoneline and with some tweaking help from a BT engineer in relation to the line gain.

alot of factors come into play with DUN phone connections a few are.....

distance from exchange
distance from phone point in house
how many other phones connected to line in house
line quality, some rural lines are known to be poor.

so his 36ish maybe the best that his line can cope with, a call the his phone provider and ask if anything can be done to clean the line up ( GAIN ) may help a bit but it will not give a magical 56k connection possibly 40-ish at best.

Oh yea, his lines probably horable or something, eh, he used to only connect at 20 something till I updated the modems drivers so yea, that have anything to do with it? And I was mainly talking about programs that are supposed to make your net faster? Do these work at all? I'm guessing it's most of those things you said which is why his connections so poor it's just he cant do much about it and this is just a temp thing, I think he's getting broadband soemtime this summer.

Sadly no magical fix to making DUN any quicker, you could tweak with MTU values but there not going to improve much, if there was a magical fix to speed up DUN then there would be no-one complaining on how its SUCKS bigtime, I know I was on DUN for 6yrs before our village entered the 21st century and ADSL was enabled.

Some apps liek this one http://www.majorgeeks.com/download2351.html or http://www.majorgeeks.com/download472.html can tweak his settings but the gain may well be much better but most of the time its a small gain, but hey even small gains are worth it? what I would say is do a internet speed test before using the tweaking app then take the test again after tweaking to see if its improved.

if he's downloading software/drivers etc etc then I would advise getting a Download manager like StarDownloader or Fresh Download
