I'm trying to find an easy way to get my network online in the event of my cable service going down. Hurricane season is coming again. Last year my cable was out of service for 2 weeks due to Hurricane Ivan. I used my dial up on one computer to get online but I'd like to unplug my router from my cable modem and plug it into an old computer or something to get the whole network back up without reconfiguring any of my machines. Any ideas for a simple fix? I have a couple of old computers around that I could use as a gateway.

    No can do.

You need a Router with serial port and External DailUp modem to mainatain the Routing through the Router.

Otherwise you need to Route the DialUp witha Software NAT (ICS).

Is it possible to use a laptop with a built in modem and a NIC to share the internet connection but only when necessary? I mean, could I create a new user and set up the laptop to have the default internet connection through my dial up ISP and bridge that to the NIC to be shared? However if I logged in with a different user name the NIC would be my default internet connection.
