Whenever I start Windows XP, a "Dial-up Connection Window" pops up on the desktop. Can anyone please tell me how to stop this from occuring. I have already googled this every way I can imagine and found many cases like mine but no solid remedy.

I have already ticked "Never Dial a Connection" in internet properties\connections.

This thread here has the same scenario as mine, but they were able to remove dial up connections to solve the problem since dsl was being used. Dial-up is all that is available to me where I live so that solution will not work.

Actually this just started happening recently, I have done all the malware scans for dialers and removed the dialer set-up files from my ISP, and cleaned out all known remnants of it. I manually created a new connection after removing my ISP's set-up files.

This is an XP issue, and I am looking for the registry key to modify through "regedit". Somehow I should be able to disable this pop-up window. I have already removed the RAS/Auto Dial value in my registry as seen below. It stops anything from automatically dialing for a connection.
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\RAS Autodial\Addresses

Can someone help me find the key to disable this annoying dial-up window?

Have you loked in the run keys

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\windows\currentversion\run

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\windows\currentversion\runonce

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\windows\currentversion\runonceex

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\windows\currentversion\run

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\windows\currentversion\runonce

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\windows\currentversion\runonceex

also look in LOCAL_MACHINE for your RAS keys.

I couldn't find anything in the run keys. However I did find my RAS Autodial keys in LOCAL_MACHINE

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\RAS Autodial\Default

Once there I found "DefaultInternet", then modified it to ( value not set )

My connection is still in "Start\Connect to" but it no longer has default connection applied to it.

I'll see if it works, this dial-up window doesn't pop-up on every boot up. Maybe every 3rd or 4th time. In the image I uploaded I could see that my former default connection was listed there. Maybe this will be the answer.

I'll see what comes of this and post back. Thanks for your help!

Well the previous steps have not worked, it is still there.
It seems that it appears on the first boot up of each day, maybe it has some kind of timing value to it.

Surely there has to be a way to disable this pop-up pest!

    Any Ideas?

have you checked your startup folder in start --> all programs?
have you checked to see if there is anything in msconfig, that you can disable? - sos

I tend to agree, are you sure that a program like antivirus isn't dialing for an update?

    My startup folder is empty
I'm not sure just what to look for in msconfig!
I tried to copy and paste my start up list but couldn't.
But here is a screenshot, there are probably a couple of things I could remove.

Well you have AVG antivirus running at startup. It is probably trying to update once a day. I don't run that antivirus program so I can't tell you where but if you open it and look around there should be an option or preference setting that would have it update manually.

Hi, I just wanted to report back and say that I reset my update options to manual in AVG. Its been about two days now and the dial up window has not appeared.

It looks like AVG was the cause all along, it received a major update several weeks ago and apparently changed some of my settings. I had that happen once before, that time it changed my settings to "reboot after every update".
I just need to remember to keep an eye on my settings after major updates.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction! ;)
