Dial Up Connection with Linux Distros ?

Hi,
Total linux noob here and I have been trying some live distros recently.
I have a friend that has a broadband connection, he has burned several distros for me. We have used them with his connection and can get online easily with them.

I have dial up (it's all that is available to me) and I have come to realize after searching that my winmodem is keeping me from setting up a connection with the distros.

What I have is a Dell dimension E310, it has a Conexant D850 56k V.9x DFVC modem.

I found this site called Linuxant and it has linux drivers for conexant modems. I ran the app that came from the "identify your modem chipset" link.

Problem is I don't know what I am looking for or what I need, I got the log report that I can post if needed.

I am just wanting to be able to set up a connection and get online with various distros.

Thanks for the reply, that's what I thought would need to happen from what I've read so far.

A couple more questions,

Will that external modem be a secondary modem for linux only or will it override the soft modem and become the default modem for my win XP also?

Where would I begin looking for one at, maybe newegg?
