I have a computer that I have been working on that is connected with a 56k modem. After it dials up and makes a connection, it will shut the computer down and cause it to reboot. I have tried 3 differant modems and they all do the same thing. I can put the computer online useing DSL or wireless and it runs just fine. Does anybody have any ideas???

Hi boxcarmarty and welcome to MGs.
Are you referring to 3 internal cards you have used or external?
If internal, I would try a different expansion slot, perhaps there is a problem with the slot itself.
If external, I have no ideas.
Perhaps there is a configuration problem with the power settings in the internal cards aslo. (Really grasping at straws here.)
Any errors shown during the shutdown or just a reboot and that's it?
Have you checked Event Viewer in Administrative Tools for any errors?

One question - Why would you want to use dial up in the first place if DSL and wireless is available?

I have tried both internal (pci) and external (usb) modems with the same results. It is my fathers computer and the only thing he has available in his area is dial up and he doesn't like the cost of a cellular connection. His dial up connection is so slow in Gods country, I bring his computer to my house once a month to run his updates and download new virus definitions. The problem started when his old McAfee subscription expired and a new McAfee 2011 was installed. I have tried backdating the system but it didn't help any. I have also contacted McAfee on several occations and they have done a remote from thier end and found nothing wrong. I have connected both here and at his house on dial up, and after the connection is made, the screen goes black and the system reboots. The latest error report is the following:

    Product: Windows Operating System
    ID: 1003
    Source: System Error
    Version: 5.2
    Symbolic Name: ER_KRNLCRASH_LOG
    Message: Error code %1, parameter1 %2, parameter2 %3, parameter3 %4, parameter4 %5.

I would run this tool - http://www.majorgeeks.com/McAfee_Consumer_Product_Removal_Tool_d5420.html - at least 2 times in Safe Mode (F8 at boot up) and then try the connection before reinstalling.
If that succeeds, then try reinstalling McAfee and see if the same thing happens.
There could possibly be a hanger on from the previous version that is causing conflicts or something in the newer version that is causing problems.

That was ran during the last remote session with McAfee, but at this point I'll try anything twice.....

In the last remote session, did the support staff try to connect with McAfee uninstalled?

Ok, I did the uninstall. The connection was good without McAfee. Once McAfee was reinstalled, the connection shut down again. I did another remote with McAfee tech support tier 2 level, (the higher level geeks) and after a couple of more tries and lost connections, It was determined that McAfee 2011 does not really support dial-up. When McAfee 2011 was installed, it changed the network connection profile which created the software issue with a dial-up connection. After the profile was changed back, I was able to connect for an hour with no problems.

All is good again in Martysville.....
