I recently aquired a computer that has been hooked up to a T1 line for it's entire life. I want to configure it so that it can dialup my ISP. Just clicking on my computer does not turn up a dialup networking icon. A search of C drive doesn't turn up a Dial-up Networking Icon either. So how can I find/obtain a dialup networking Icon so that I can configure it to dial my internet service provider. . Thanks

Actually a search of C drive does turn up a dialup networking icon but when I click on it, it takes me to my C Icons none of which say dialup networking.

I guess technically that would be a dial-up Networking FOLDER.

I haven't used Win98 for quite some time now but look for an icon or folder that is labeled 'My Network Places' or 'Network Neighborhood'. Have you tried installing your ISP software? Sometimes they will do what you are asking by themselves as part of their install process.

Shark my isp doesn't issue software. On most computers you just click on "my computer "then there is a dialup networking folder next to printers etc etc. You just click on "Make a new connection" and fill the fields in with the appropriate information from your ISP - But in this case there is no dialup networking folder.

I have a network neighborhood icon on my desktop. But no help there.

I may be mistaken but I'm thinking that is where you make the dial up connection. Again, it has been so long since I've used 98 that I'm not sure.

Dial-up networking may well not be installed.

To check do the following ( you may need the win98 disk tho )

From control panel double click Add/Remove Programs then click on the Windows SetUp Tap.

A list appears with different components which can be installed.
Click on Communications then click on the tab below named Details.......

    Ensure Dial-Up-Networking is enabled

If it is not then enable it then click OK, then Ok again to come out Windows SetUp, you may then get a prompt to restart your computer...

exactamondo right on the money. Thanks Halo ( hands across the ocean and all that) and shark for your help. By the way I did not need the 98 disk to do it either.

being a machine built by an OEM the cab files for win 98 have to be on the hard drive. It's part of the win 98 preinstall that they get copied to c:\windows\options\cabs, then windows runs an automated install from that directory. If you're hurting for space you can delete that directory, but any changes that require system files you'll need the win98 disk.
