Hi all - I am having a problem with my current ISP, Copper.net I am using Windows XP, SP3 and have my automatic updates turned on. I also use the Avast antivirus program. I have a private phone line so no one else is on there. I just installed new phone wires, a new modem, did a good cleaning up of my computer (Dell Dimension 2100) so all that stuff is ok. What my problem is is when I am connected to Copper, I have 2 small computers in my lower toolbar that show the bytes sent and received. When those little puters are both lit up, I know it's working. But sometimes for no apparent reason, they go off and stop working entirely. They are usually off long enough to cause me to lose what I am working on even though I refresh my browser. Does anyone have an answer to why this happens? Thanks!!!

I deleted your other 2 posts, please only post once, thanks! Back in the day, if you did not have any activity, a phone line would disconnect. I wonder if you have access to DSL or cable where you are. You can often get broadband internet for the cost of some dial up ISPs. They are also faster and more reliable. Phone lines were never designed for transferring data, back in the day if you complained to your phone company and told them it was for internet, they would not help you. Finally, you have many other problems as a possibility, like multiple lines in your home, which even if your on a private line, could be shared with other lines in the house and add to static.

Thank you Major Attitude for trying to help me. I still don't have DSL in my area and our cable company for TV is currently working on getting internet service to us. I probably won't go with them because their service is terrible! I could get a service in my area called Sciotowireless but they want $300 to hook you up and $50/month just for internet! Too much money for me right now. But, thanks for your help. Bev

If your phone line is not new to the road then that could cause issues. Since you have no high speed available, I assume your very rural, so my guess is simply distance and line quality, something you might not have control over, especially since it appears you covered everything you could. Wish we could do more for you.

Major, I think my next step will be to ask the telephone company to put in a new line. It has been in the house now for about 15 years so it could have gone bad somewhere. I do know that when I first got Copper I could stay connected and working (playing too) for hours with no interruptions. I live on a river and it floods yearly so maybe a wire got wet that isn't showing up yet. I'm going to give them a call and I thank you again for your time kind sir. Love your website! Bev
