I'm posting on behalf of a friend...
Snipped and quoted from an e-mail...

    ----------------------------
He, "phoned kos.net (dial-up provider) this morning. They no longer provide accelerator for dial-up" (but didn't tell him).

"So still with no proxy, some pages are terribly slow. Even got Hotmail this morning" (he hasn't been able to open messages in Hotmail, however, is able to open messages within his dial-up providers e-mail address).

"Tech says the biggest problem today is the amount of data that's being used from software, hogging the band width etc. etc. He suggested I disable anti-virus, which takes a lot of bandwidth".

"So I uninstalled the SuperAntiSpyware thingy, but can't see any where to disable the Microsoft Security Essentials Antivirus. In other words, for those of us left with dial-up ..... tough sh--t! What hacker is going to bother trying to get into my slow dial up anyway???"
    ----------------------------

... as you can see, he's very frustrated, this has been happening for a while now. He says he hasn't done anything differently. The connection has always been slow, but now it's down to a crawl. His security programs are always kept up to date, he's also completed antivirus and spyware scans, everything's ok. The computer still has some warranty time left, but he's too frustrated dealing with the computer, that he has put it on the back burner for now.

Is there anything I can suggest to him that may help solve this issue? I've asked him to go back to the computer shop with a written list of what he's experiencing. Is there something he can do, we're both somewhat computer illiterate, we find our way around but don't know the technicalities.

I'm sorry for the long winded post.
    Thank you.

    What is dial up??

HA, just kidding. Sorry to hear about those issues, I would probably kill myself if I still had dial-up. Try this:

Start > Run > msconfig > Startup tap and disable everything. There could be updaters always checking for updates. You could even look in services for your virus software and disable it if it is in there as well.

Disable Windows Firewall by going to Control Panel, Windows Firewall.

And disable windows updates by going to Control Panel, Windows Update, Change settings, and never check for updates.

Reboot after all that and hopefully that helps out a bit
