Did DSL kill the sound?

My girlfriend just switched over to DSL/w router on her DELL 2.5 GHz system. Once it was installed, the sound ceased to work. If I disconnect the DSL and go back to Dial-up, the sound works just fine. What am I overlooking here? All help appreciated.

Is your DSL modem connected via USB, or via Ethernet?

Do your speakers have a separate power source, or rely on the computer?

Yes the speakers have a separate power supply using an ac adapter, and the modem is connected via USB.

Computer information:

Dell Dimension 8250
Intel Pentium 4 cpu
2.40GHZ
256 MB of ram

A customer of mine had this exact same problem in fact... Except the dsl modem was connected with ethernet instead of usb. I never found out the problem though since we had to format and reinstall anyway, and by doing so the problem went away.

My guess is service pack 1 for Win XP if that's what you have. There's some networking problems in the first version that sp1 fixes, that could be it.

If not I'm pretty anxious to know what the fix is!

 

I checked her system and it is running XP Home Edition with Service Pack 1, including all the SP2 Hotfixes. I'll continue to research it and let you know what I come up with.

As an aside, I have excluded the possibility of missing drivers, viruses, and adware-malware-spyware. The system is clean and all the drivers are present and active/working properly.
