Did some war driving for class...

the other night. we were putting together a small project. We didn't connect to any networks, just scanned for encrypted to non-encrypted ratio and talked with some people about their networks..

Pretty good ratio of non-enc to enc.. 75% UN-encrypted out of 109 802.11b nodes scanned. I couldn't believe it. A few people said that they had no clue how to secure it, some opted not to install WiFi because of their lack of knowlege on how to secure it and some said that their employers prohibit home WiFi for whatever reason.

We had fun..

My wifi and I were divorced 12 years ago.

 

LOL - The WIFI had ran away with a buddy - wrecked his marriage and collapsed a whole circle of friends. I had believed that my marriage to the WIFI had was secure. Apparently I wasn't using enough encryption in my communications and the WIFI had - was. The moral? Talk like a woman and secure those communications with strong encryption.

 

Heh, I wrote a little statistics script for kismet that gives you all sorts of pretty graphs and things using php, including the percentage encrypted, using WPA, non-encrypted and number of defaults setups. I could post if people were interested

Going for a war drive in London provides quite a number of fully default networks! Pretty sad, really...

I found a good public open wifi hotspot in london, Leicester Square. It's from the Radisson hotel which is in one of the corners. I think it's supposed to be for people who have rooms there, but there is no indication of that fact - I'm guessing they left it open for people in their reception or something. It's a nice little hotspot when you're in need of Internet access and you're in central London. Quite quick connection, too.
