what are all the major differneces between these two types, and is core 2 duo that much better than a pentium d, right now i have a pentium D i was cnsidering getting a core 2 duo in a month or two but maybe i should wait a while and get a core quad, im unsure

    thanks

What PD do you have and what c2d do you plan on getting?

C2D's are faster but in terms of real world proformance and gains the avrage joe will see its not really worth the upgrade. If i were you i would just save up and make my next upgrade quad core.

Some advantages they have is the higher FSB. There are 800mhz fsb C2D's but they can be modded to 1066 most of the C2D's are 1066 and 1333 fsb. They also run cooler and take less power than a PD.

I say wait for a quad core. PD's are still good chips and i know people who are still gameing today on single core Athlons so your CPU is upto the task so upgradeing to another dual core is kinda pointless. Go quad.

If you have the money and you need it because your current isn't performing as well then go for it. If you're not experiencing slow computing then wait for quad core to come down in price. Will be more future proof IMO.

well i have the money i mean, do i need it no not really but i like to have the good specs and the job i do requires alot of RARing, amd damn this computer will bog down, im about to upgrade the ram

anyways, this is what i have now http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116237

this is what i was looking at

the thing is, if i go quad id have to buy a new mobo also, the current one i have will accept a core2duo, the only thing is i "tink" the current one has only a 800 fsb, thats the downside, tho my ram is also 800 and i dont really want to rebuy everything since i just did that 5 months ago,

i am hopeful going from 1 GB to 2 will help alot, what is better 2 1GB sticks or 4 512, i can support either 2 at dual channel or 4

I do a lot of editing and stuff including raring files the core 2 is faster per say but if you rar a lot you may be better off with the quad.i went from pent d 930 @ 3.0 gig to q660 quad @ 2.4 and lovin it :) dont notice much difference till you convert a movie or some such. cut my times in half
