Difference Between Wifi Router And Access Point?

I wanted to know what is the difference between a wifi router and an access point because I want to extend my homenetwork which is currently using 3 wireless router(configured as APs) connected via LAN with a decent switch (TL-SG2424)

I'm totally aware that a router does routing, etc. and an access point is only like a switch for wireless. However an AP has less functions and it is more expensive than an wifi router with the same specs.

So I wanted to know which would be the better choice a cheaper wifi router or an Access Point?

If you have a largish LAN and are ok with the ethernet cables then another WiFi router would be fine, if you wish to not have LAN cables all over the home then an AP can be set to be a Wireless repeater (as well as connecting via LAN), so simple main difference is that you need a LAN cable for a Wifi Router but not for a Wireless AP. If the cheaper solution that you are currently using now with 3 wireless routers is working stick with that, and an alternative that I use, but depends on spare power sockets you have is to look into powerline type connections (other makers models are available)

Thanks for your input DavidGP. TBH 3 Wireless routers and LAN cables make my apartment look like a mess so I'm willing to consider getting an access point at this time. I'm currently looking to purchase an from Linksys and Aerohive. Who do you think offers the best value for money? Do you have any other brand in mind? I also would like to know what's the best model that can work for a homenetwork?
