Different Memory

I just put in a stick of kingston pc2700 526mb ram into my system and i have my old 256 of samsung that it came with just lyin' around... could i use both at the same time or will that mess something up because i have always heard that you have to have stuff matched up, like 256 with 256 and soo on.

You could put it in, but it would make your new ram run slower

but they are both pc 2700? why would it make it run slower? would the system overall run faster because then it will have 700 whatever

No, the reason it would run slower is because your new kingston ram is fanst and good, but your old samsung memory is probably NOT as fast as your kingston, I mean your new ram has faster TIMINGS than your old RAM. So your Kingston would be forced to run at the timings of your Samsung!

As SleepyGamer said it would most likely have different timings, but as its the same overall spec ( PC 2700 ) then the difference wouldnt be vastly negative to overall system performance... unless you are a hardcore overclocker like SleepyG.

personally if you use your PC for normal everyday use.. pop it in it will help.

What I would try and I did this with a reletives PC, which I was updating the amount of ram, was to install EVEREST and benchmark the memory with the new sick of ram in and write down the figures, then pop the old stick in and benchmark the two and see what the difference was, I think the difference was 100 points, so in the grand scheme of things it was neither here or there so we left the two in, it still had better performance than the 1 stick of 256 it originally had in.
