Differnet Laptops, Different Internet Speeds

    Hi guys.

So I have 2 laptops - 1 is a Toshiba laptop that is about 5 years old and the other is a fairly new Asus laptop that I bought less than 6 months ago. The newer one has better Specs than my Toshiba (as far as I can tell) but for some reason it's my older Toshiba laptop that gets higher downloading speeds. My Toshiba laptop was able to download a file with about 500 kb/sec whereas my newer Asus is still downloading that same file at about 80 kb/sec. The speeds used to be the same but somehow they changed and my older laptop downloads files a lot faster now. A friend told me I should check if it's my Antivirus blocking my Bandwidth speed. My Toshiba Laptop has Norton 360 but I don't think my Asus has any Antivirus. I periodically use Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware software to get rid of Viruses.

I was wondering if anyone can help me explain why my older laptop has a higher download speed than my newer and if someone can help me boost the speed on my newer laptop as well.

    Thanks for your time.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Could your older laptop be using a download accelerator?
Are both laptops using the same version of the same browser with the same add-ons?

No download accelerator that I know of. I didn't put anything like that in.
And yes. Both were using Opera (the browser that I mainly use) with all the same plug ins.

It is also possible that your AV software is what is slowing down the one computer.

Nice to see you back, handygal!! ;)

Or you mean the lack of an AV Software?
I don't have any AV software already downloaded on it. I had one but It ran out.

What is your set up? Both running wireless? Any difference if you plug them directly into the modem? ( one at a time for testing purposes )?

Hi Tim! Good to have a few minutes to read the boards, it's been a rough one.

Cloudydays *GASP* don't tell TimW that you don't have AV! Oh, the hours TimW will donate to help those who need desperate malware damage help.

What AV is the new laptop running? What did it come with?

On the new Asus laptop, I would look at the wireless card vendor's site for new drivers. Asus also has a control program that will adjust settings to optimize performance. Check if that thing is running, it used to like to take the CPU down to 50% on an old one we had at the office, made me crazy.

Sorry to hear that. Hope all is well with you now.
I feel a malware thread around the corner.

    Cloudydays, please read this:

Hmm..are you intending that I follow those steps to get better protection? Uh.. could that be what is causing the difference in internet speeds?

I posted that as a guide for you to make sure your protection software is adequate. And yes, that can make a difference. ;)

Well the one with the AV Software goes faster than the one without so.. yeah.
Perhaps the lack of one is allowing malware to slow it down?
Though there is no malware last I checked..

I'd be hesitant to say you were not having malware issus since you have no AV software installed. If you would, on the slow computer, download MGtools and save it to your root folder. C:\MGTools.exe --- run the exe. file (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). Attach the resultant C:\MGLogs.zip.

It seems it's still doing something but it's been stuck like that for a while? Or shall I wait longer for it to finish and repost results?

It should have gotten to the point of telling you it was finished and creating the logs at C:\MGLogs.zip.

Did you agree to the license to run HJT? You need to agree twice.

It didn't so I went back to run it again but it apparently saved a .zip by itself? I mean I found one in there and I unzipped it to find some text files. What should I post?

    Yes, attach the entire C:\MGLogs.zip.

I am not seeing any problems in your logs. You do need to clean out this folder:
    C:\Users\Owner\Local Settings\TEMP

You have Avast installed on this computer. Is this the slow one? If it is, you might try disabling Avast and then run a speed test. Enable Avast immediately afterward.

I actually just downloaded avast on my laptop this morning.
And no, this is for the slower laptop.
And alrightyo, I'll clear out that folder.
    Any other suggestions?..
