Difficult start WIN 98 SE

It takes 6 to 8 goes to start my computer. It powers up but doesn't boot or send a signal to Monitor. After a couple of attempts , it might boot kick the monitor into life and BIOS works then stalls, then another go might get me to win splash screen but takes a couple more goes before booting up completely. After it finally starts/boots properly it seems to run fine.

The only other clue is that when I start it say 2-3 times then leave it "running" for 15 minutes, I can then often boot it the next time: It's like it wants to warm up before it will boot all the way.

Any ideas?

It would help to know a little more about your setup.
Motherboard, processor,Ram, and psu.
Everest home edition can be downloaded , free from majorgeeks download section, which can give you the information.

 

Sounds like it needs a good internal clean.
I normally use an air line and blow nozzle for this.
Also take out the memory, pc cards and processor, clean the sockets and contacts and replace. Check all cable connectors are properly seated.
I'll bet all the runs england make in their next match that this is the problem

You say it runs OK when finally started? If a win98 system spluttered at the start and also 'forgot' settings whilst running I would look at the motherboard conin cell battery, which must be past its best by now.

That's not a very big gamble .... looking to me like a white wash. OZ to win in 2 straight!

By the way I'll give the old girl a clean as you suggest and see, but I'm not losing setup detail... replaced internal battery about 2 years ago.
