    Hi,
I have been trying to download Spybot and have not been able to. I found this probelm is not restricted to just this software. I also had the same probelm with the downloads from the sticky "Before You Post Asking For Help, Please Read This". The downloads hang once it looks like it installs correctly but than stalls. I get Not Responsed message from the Windows Manager and than I can not close any of the windows from the install or shut down properly. I hold the button on the tower down to shut down the PC.
I have tried to Restore from a System Checkpoint two months ago and that did not work so I reverted the restoration.

    I have a Dell DIM 3000, P4,2,8 GHZ, 533, 1MG. Using Windows XP Home.
Let me know if you require any other information to help me trouble shoot
    this.
    Thank you,
    Franca

  2. Oh yeah your haveing spyware problems right? I recently serviced a pc that was in such bad shape that if i open my computer, the system would like have the screen go into the wallpaper and it would stop up. Try to install adaware se and if you cant update right away thats fine. Just run a full system scan and remove everything found. Then if everything can at least be used update and scan again. At that point do the read and run me first and post in the spyware forum where the good guys over there can take it from there. If you can not download adaware try saving to a disk or something and run it from that.

I have run Adaware, Norton and Anitspyware, they come up clean. Do you really think it is spyware? Everything else works fine on my PC.

Try Deleting the Temporary Internet Files:

    1. Close all instances of OE and IE.
    2. Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab.
    3. Click the "Delete Files" button.
    4. When prompted place a check in: "Delete all offline content", click OK.

If Steve's suggestion fails, try closing any background programs, and check Event Viewer in Administrative Tools (in Control Panel) for any clues.

I tried the removing Offline Content but that did not work.
Should I look at application, security or system inteh Event Viewer? I am not really sure what to look at.

Try Application first, if not then System. If you then double-click the error responsible it may give you more details?

Also try closing any programs that aren't vital that are running in the background, and try deleting all temp files using disk cleanup.

BTW, when you are downloading, are you doing so via a browser (and if so which one) or what?

Here is something I see under Application:
"The description for Event ID ( 35 ) in Source ( ISSVC ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: ISService."

    Yes - I am downloading via IE v 6.0.2900

Do you have another browser you can use, or a download manager, to see if this problem is exclusive to Internet Explorer?

The error you supplied, is it at the same time as the downloading problem, otherwise it might not be related?

Make the error happen again, then immediately check and confirm using the time.

Also, have you tried saving and running the download from another location, say Desktop?

I will try everything you suggest tomorrow - I need to get some sleep for the office tomorrow. Thanks for your support. Domani

  11. Well try this command it may help sfc /scannow (notice a space between sfc and the /) You will need the windows cd to do this. Let it run then check again and come back here if the problem persists.

    Hi,
I have tried to download from Desktop and I still get the same condition. It allows me to install but when it comes time to actually run the exe everything stalls. I also tried sfc /scannow but nothing I still get the same outcome. Any ideas?

  13. It could be a lsp problem. Try lsp fix and let it fix what it finds. It can be found here on majorgeeks.com. Try that and let us know if that helps

I have found lsp fix but I do not see winsflt.dll. The only selections in the Keep section are :mswsock.dll, rsvpsp.dll, winrnr.dll. I don't select anything so when I choose finish nothing really happens.

  15. Do not click the i know what im doing box. Just start the program and click finish as this will make the program work automatically. Just start it and click finish as this will work automatically. Let me know if that helps. Oh and one more thing, make sure all browser windows are closed when you click fix.

LSP Fix is to restore access to the Internet, not for downloading or installing problems.

I did run LSP Fix without selecting anything and I get 0 results. What else would you suggest I try?

Sorry to go over old ground, but what is the main problem, is it trouble downloading, or installing?

Again, is the downloading problem via Internet Explorer, or a download manager or what?

  19. Thanks for pointing that out insomniac. I just thought it may be related if it is a problem with downloading. But yes please clarify the problem as the details are a little sketchy.

I am able to run the install but as soon as it prmpts me to run the exe file it hangs. Than I can not shut down my PC properly.
Once I restart though everything on my desktop works OK - however the software I laoded is still not available.

  21. Have you tried to clean your registry using ccleaner. Get it here on mg.com. Also try installing the file again and un click the start program box when you get the post install screen. Then once it is installed dont do anything else and restart your computer. Then try the program.

I just ran cceaner and than restarted. I also did as you suggested and insatlled the software again - once I was prompted to run the program I restarted instead. However once I ran the exe I got the same problem - the window locks up and I can not properly shut down.
I have tried downloading from IE and saving it locally - in either case I get the same results.
I am still not able to access the software I wish to download - what should I try next?

Hi - can anyone take a look at this again? I would really like to try and resolve this issue in this forum since you have helped me in the past.

  24. Do programs run if they are run by a disk or somehow not downloaded from the internet?

Installing software from a a disk works fine.

  26. Have you tried to a windows repair?

I just ran a Registry Mechanic scan (PC Tools software) but did not solve the problem even though it did some repairs. Is that what you meant by Window Repair?

No, a Windows repair is done with your XP CD.

It's a last resort, but your problem is rather strange and you don't have any other options really.

    HERE is a step-by-step guide.

Read the warnings and the entire procedure first before you decide.

  29. francamia

    francamia Private E-2

Sorry but this sounds too risky for me. Anything else I can try instead?

  30. I really do not know if there is much of another option. Have you tried sfc /scannow yet? If that dont work the repair is the only way to go. In reality all you lose is updates. The rest of the machine remains as is. Just empty out the my documents folders and go for it. Insomniac is right. There is not much of a choice in your position. Either this or reinstall. Go for this first scince you really dont lose anything. Good luck.

Insomniac is probably right, could be your only option and it would solve several problems.

Try this, you may not be able to run it but give it a shot. Go to the link below and scroll down to line #12 on the left-hand side, EXE Fix for Windows XP. Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt.

After you run it try your download and setup.

Nope that did not work

  33. Wait a minute! Have you tried system restore? Find the date that is before the problem started and revert to it and see if that helps. If that dont help, i think the only way to go is system restore.

  34. francamia

I have already tried a system restore but that did not work.

  35. Then i guess you have no choice but to do a winxp repair. Follow the instructions that insomniac gave you and you should be fine.
