    Hi,

Seems that my original BSOD problems went a bit deeper than just AVGs messup to make my life easyer i decided to just format and reinstall windows.

Well i thought it would make my life easyer, im now on the third attempt at getting my machine up.

    Hardware -
    Mobo - Gigabyte GA-P55-USB3
    CPU - intel i5
    GFX Card - HD 5770
    Mem - 4gb ram
    HD 1 Tb

So this is what im doing.
Run Win7 Disk as boot - do custom install - format C. and install.
When thats done, i put in my mobo driver disk, do express install and install utils.
Then when thats done i try and do the windows updates. This is where it appears to hang.

    How long can this take?
    Am i doing something wrong?
Do you need any further information?

As a side note, im just installing it again and when it did the first reboot a screen came up and it looked like there were 2 options of win7 to pick? I have no idea what this was.

The machine is a self build and its worked fine since i made it November appart from the blue screening recently. Id appreciate any help or advice regardless how basic it is.

    Thanks
    Brian.

did you check device manager to assure there are no ! bangs beside any devices? do any other network functions function? can you open the control panel, go to network connections/devices and assure that your network interface is alive and well?
What's the status of your build? If you go to Computer>Properties, scroll to bottom of page, check your product key and Activation status.

Something went wrong so idecided to reinstall again,

Now all the updates seem to be failing more than not.

    What could be causing this?

well the easy answer is timeouts/retries, which could be due to issues anywhere in your network chain - the cable or DSL Modem, for instance, and those issues can be VERY elusive. I've seen cases with TW Roadrunner where on most tasks the network seemed ok, but on big longish tasks, a significant number of retries were happening in the background. Their techs were called in, and they redid EVERY connection from the crossconnect to the inside of the office, and still the issues persisted. Went through three changes of modems until finally got one that could sustain a long connection. And, unfortunately the easy tests like Speakeasy don't reveal that kind of issue except tangentially by inference. If its DSL its much worse... I can't think of the last time I saw a DSL setup that was actually producing the published standard [minimal].

What I'm saying is that there may be nothing wrong with your machine or Win7.
    Are you using wireless?
    Cable?
Are you downloading the entire update file, then executing? Or not?

    we need details.

Im on a cable modem. Im doing the updates a few at a time now and it seems a little bit healthyer.

So its just a matter of retrying it again and again and hoping for the best.

It seems to have hung now whilst installing KB2443685 how do i stop it, clicking the buttong has greyed it and it cant be clicked again. Ill leave it to its own bits for a few minitues, failing that should i reboot?

given the trouble you have had, you might try an alternative way of getting the big ones. sp1 is on softpedia and other sites [in fact it might be right here on good 'ole MG], for download - so you download/save as a file, then run it so you're not dependent on a network connection to fetch bits at a time.

Right well I decided to start afresh.

Turned it off, made sure everything was dust free and seated properly.

And everything has run like silk, no problems whatsoever.

    I hate computers at times.

Ive heard that you can take some kind of snapshot of your system so that you dont have go through it all again.

I think something like a ghost but im not sure. It will need to be easy to use.

    Thanks for the assistance.
