Dificulty getting post boot beep

Have 2 computers abit Kt7 mobos both built exactly the same cases power supplies etc. They both developed the same problem some time ago, that is to get them to boot, a lot of the time after switching on I have to pull out or disconnect power and retry several times before they will eventually give the boot peep and come to life. Could this be power supply battery on motherboard or are the just old and worn out. Thoughts suggestions appreciated.

 

If you haven't replaced the CMOS battery on the motherboard yet give that a try. It would eliminate a simple problem that can cause your symptoms.

 

Any PC over four years old, exhibiting any problems that warrant opening up the case, should get a new CMOS battery, whether you think it needs it or not. It's a CR-2032 Lithium, coin type, battery, available at almost all drug stores and electronics stores (Radio Shack).
Testing a battery with a digital volt meter, the battery should show 3.0 vdc or more or it should be replaced.

I would also pull the ram and examine it. If its dirty, I would clean it, and be sure to thoroughly clean the edge connector before you reset the ram back into its slot. Then just for grins and giggles, pull every power plug in the system and RE-SEAT it.

Somewhere along this process, many current and future problems can be eliminated.
No PC ever leaves my shop without getting a thorough Cleaning and a new CMOS battery. CR-2032 Lithium batteries can be had for about a dollar a piece, in bulk.
So that's not a good place to skimp.
