Digital monitor & KVM switch

I want to hook up a KVM switch to my old computer (vga monitor port, serial mouse and kb---OK) and my new Dell with digital video monitor/geforce video card, and USB connections to mouse and kb.

I bought DVI to VGA adapter but am wondering if it will really still give me digital signal. I don't know how to check if my monitor is working in serial or digital mode. Is there way to check this on the puter? Maybe not necessary...

Also, I've had problems before with KVM not working with a serial to USB adapter for the optical mousey.

    Any advice/comments?
