It should work very similar to a regular ol' VCR: you select the day and time to start recording, the length of time, and the channel. Many cable systems now have program codes for each show/channel and you can use this code instead of entering the date, time, channel, etc. No, you shouldn't have to buy anything new in terms if service from the cable company. You might want to call the customer service folks just to ask some questions; just don't ask them if you need to add to or upgrade your cable plan because they WILL say yes whether you need it or not and they'll do everything in their power to get you to agree to a rate increase. This happened to a friend of mine. They insisted the DVR wouldn't work without on demand programming (which is a big pile of :crap because I use rabbit ears-no cable-for my TV and we used the DVR on my TV with no problems) and they ended up 'upgrading' his service and charging an additional $24.95 a month for something he never wanted or agreed to. They eventually took the charges off after 3 months, and credited him the 3 months that he had to pay while they straightened the whole thing out. 10 minutes on the phone took 3 months to straighten out.... you gotta love the freekin' cable company ;)

BTW- he still has on demand, they forgot to turn it off during the whole fiasco. Only now it's free :D

I just bought a new Gateway with a recorder, I just hooked up my cable and it worked great in windows media center. Now I'm looking for a way to cut the commercials.
