Dimension XPS Gen2 Onboard Ethernet Port Problem

I just purchased a used motherboard for a Dell Dimension XPS Gen2 desktop. I can not get the ethernet port to work. I plug the cable into it, and nothing happens. The ethernet port lights do not come on when the cable is plugged in. Windows states that it is not connected. I have the driver installed, and the NIC is enabled in BIOS. The device manager states it is working properly, and there is no yellow question mark next to it. The ethernet cable works on two other computers, and worked on the motherboard I am replacing.

Also: After failing to get the ethernet port to work, I installed the USB driver for the modem. I was able to connect using a usb connection to the modem.

    Operating System: WinXP Home
    Motherboard: DELL DIMENSION XPS GEN 2 MOTHERBOARD, GH001 U2424 0GH001 0U2424
    Network Driver: Intel Gigabit LOM
Network Card (onboard): IntelĀ® PRO/1000 MT Network Connection
    Modem: Arris TM602G

I'm not sure if the port if faulty, or if there is a fix?

Can someone please advise me to the problem?

    Thanks

Sounds like a dead port. It may well be the Chipset for the NIC is fine hence Device manager seeing the device but the port is not connecting properly. I would have expect some warning to appear though. You could possibly try using a wireless dongle to network you cant get your money back on the MB

I ran the diagnostic tool. Everything passed but the "Link" test.

Easy man easy... Have you tried another Ethernet cable? :)

Maybe the one you have is damaged and hates your guts because you stepped on its face :)

Just saying, try another Cable and see if it works or try the cable on a another computer :cool

Yes, the cable works on a laptop and another desktop computer. I was able to find a different ethernet cable, and it did not work either.

    WoW...

Is your Ethernet card removable from your laptop?

If so, you know what you may need to to do.. or you can purchase the expansion NIC and try that out.. sorry man.

No, I am unable to remove the ethernet card from the laptop.

The person I bought the motherboard off of said he would send me a network card. That was very nice and considerate of him.

At least I can connect with a usb connection for the mean time.

Probably safe to say it is a dead port.

Thanks to all who responded!! Very appreciative!

Both of these were answered in the opening post.

Good shout on the PCI NIC could solve the problem and is relatively cheap if you cant get a replacement mobo!

    Hi

It's possible that the following could be the issue:

-Dirty contacts inside the ethernet port. Use a slight amount of ~90% rubbing alcohol with Q-tips, and/or an eraser, and/or a small knife blade to clean them. If even one isn't connecting properly, the port will likely not work. This is true of all electronic contacts, by the way.

-Faulty connection of the actual port to the motherboard. If you're able to, examine the area closely with a flashlight to determine if there's any irregularities.

While a network card/USB modem connection may work, I'm sure having a working ethernet port would be much better.

I was able to try this today, but with no luck.
