'dinst.exe' error upon booting up, IE failure to open

Machine: Dell, purchased right after XP launch

I have been having some minor spyware problems over the past 1-2 yrs, but have been getting by. Here is my immediate problem. Wednesday I got home opened IE, and it takes me to this screen where my modem (DSL, cause I live in the sticks and can't get cable) shows it is disconnected. That is nothing new. It was late, so I turned off the computer. The next day I come home, turn on the computer, and get this "dinst.exe" error but the computer seems to have fully booted up and is working. I try to open up IE, and it flashes on the screen for about a half second and disappears. Try again, and same thing over and over so I cannot access the internet.

I am hoping someone can help.

dinst.exe is a trojan assciated with a popular baddie that has been making the rounds lately.

You should follow the instructions here: READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support

Then post the results in the Spyware Specific Forum and one of the experts there will help you.

 

I cannot even open IE, it flashes on the screen and then disappears, so I won't be able to access any of the sites to download any of the fixes. Any other suggestions? I am writing this from work. The computer is basically dead to the outside world.

Hi Danny,

Download Firefox and put it on a disk and install it on the ill machine and use that.

Put the tools mentioned in the Sticky on the disk as well (including HJT) and transfer them that way if need be.

You may want to try IEFix - General purpose fix for Internet Explorer or add it to the above.

At any rate, start a thread in the Spyware Forum so those guys can talk you through it. (maybe a Mod will see this thread and move it)
