Hi, was wondering if anyone could help me......
    1. I have the game "the Sims" with all the expansion packs.....one day it was working fine, next day it wont load.......it starts to load, then nothing......I do ctrl-alt-del...and it says program not responding? Only thing I can do then is end task.
Ive tried other games also and got the same results...not responding
    2. I have sound working on my computer, and appears to be fine but
    3. I ran dxdiag due to the game problem and when it starts it says it had to "bypass system information for Direct Sound" Direct Music
And the report in dxdiag shows "NO Sound Tab " at all

Can anyone help me figure this out? Its really buggin me

I can supply a copy of the dxdiag report and my system info report from msinfo32 if that will help

    Thanks, thats all for now........lol

    New sound card?

    Reinstall or rollback sound drivers...

    or
Remove and reinstall your sound card..

A couple ideas to start, I am sure there will b emore to come..

    What kind of sound card?
any more details about hardware? Are you (gasp) overclocking?

have you updated your drivers for your sound card recently? if so you might have a) got a dodgey download b)got the wrong drivers. You might want to download the drivers for it again, or maybe install the drivers from the original hardware cd/floppy

Yes, the sound card drivers were recently reinstalled.....in Dec I had to format c: and reinstall everything. The sound card information was obtained thru regedit- media registry key- Ven_13f6, Dev_0100.
As you can see from the attached zip file in the .nfo all was reinstalled from the cmedia web site....they only have the one set of drivers for that information. I never did have the original cds, I had to borrow the win98 cd to even reinstall it.
Since the sound card drivers got the sound working again at that time I assumed I had downloaded the proper drivers?
Would that be wrong in assuming?.......lol
I am a learn as ya go type so any input is good....
    thanks

you need to reinstall direct x, first download lastest driver from your video card site. Your sound card is also in inactive registry.

The video drivers were updated with the latest drivers available from sis.com. Direct X was reinstalled just prior to the dxdiag report shown. Everything has been updated to the best of "my" knowledge.

In your directx report, it doesnt how your system info and what verison directx you have. Did you delete them? You may need to install directx 8.1 instead of 9. Try use directx 8.1, your system doesnt need directx 9.
Display Tab 1: Hardware-accelerated Direct3D 9 is not available because the display driver does not support it. You may be able to get a newer driver from the hardware manufacturer.
If you did download your video card manufacturer's lastest driver, then it doesnt work for directx 9 because they didnt update drivers for it yet, so stick with 8.1

No the txt file was not touched, Direct X stated it had to bypass system info. Can I download and install DirectX 8.1 on top of what I have already? seeing as its an earlier version?

I am not sure if it ok to go ahead install 8.1 verison over corrupted 9 verison. Your directx said failure, so I would try go ahead install 8.1 verison. If it doesnt work, get one of directx remover here
    www.majorgeeks.com/showfiles.php?cat=28
then reinstall 8.1. When playing Sims, try keep graphic low since you have 4mb onboard video card. I dont know about Sims you have if it very new and that it require directx 9? Does Sims have directx 9 installer?

Heres all the information I know......AMD-K6 3D processor...
    156MB Ram...CM18338/C3DX PCI Audio Device...SIS 620 Display....SOHOware PCI Network Adapter for Rogers Cable...Win98SE

I used the uninstaller for DirectX 9 reinstalled 8.1, no change, all remains as before, no sound tab in dxdiag...same bypass system information advice when starting dxdiag....if I say no dont bypass, it stops responding and I have to ctrl/alt/del to end task

I just dont know, this computer is driving me crazy.....lol
I spend more time restarting the darn thing than anything else.
My internet works but isnt as speedy as it should be considering I have cable. My sound works but isnt recognized by directX, and none of my games will load....they just all stop responding.....so my cd rom reads then just leaves me hangin.......lol
    sheesh
If I had the money I would buy a new computer but alas I am broke and have to rely on you good folks

first, let ask you, would you mind if you format your harddrive and reinstall window 98se? If you couldnt save back up files you want on cd or ghost or somewhere and if you still need files you have on harddrive, we can try other alternatives. It look like some registries are mess up and I would format and clean install then download directx 8.1, window update, video and sound card drivers, etc. Are you willing to do that?

Formating drive c and clean install of win98se is what got me where I am today......lol
I had been having problems in early Dec so tried that route....obviously not a good plan because now things are worse. Least before I had problems mainly due to too much junk on the computer taking up space.
Now I have no junk really just stuff that doesnt wanna work properly....lol

Do you have sound card on PCI? If yes, did you disable onboard sound in bios? You could remove PCI sound card and just use onboard. I believe your motherboard is made by American Megatrends probably ECS. I dont know the model of your motherboard but you can find out by open case and see model number above or between pci slots. Then go to www.ecs.com.tw to find drivers, manuel, etc that match for your model to update drivers unless you already have cd that came with your motherboard. Using both PCI and onboard sound cards at sametime does cause conflict in windows.

Sound Card on PCI, I have no idea, I dont really know what I have inside, I just research from boards like this one and go from there to find out internal info.

As for disable sound in BIOS, I was told about that before and went into bios but could find nothing about sound at all, not that I knew what it would be titled but I looked at everything to no avail

I have never opened my case for any reason, have no idea whats what, and then theres that static thing ya always hear about.....lol

I have no cds for anything, when my ex got the computer it had everything installed and ready to go, nothing came with it
That is why everything is a mystery to me......even when I had to format c last time I borrowed the windows98 cd from my aunt

You can find out if you are using PCI sound card by looking at back of your pc case. Look at gameport, sound ports nearby printer port, USB, mouse and keyboard port. You see yellow or orange port which is smaller than printer port size is a gameport. See gameport with 3 other holes by it is for sounds. Sound cards usually have gameport and sound ports together. Ok now look for same or lookalike gameport and sound ports below it. See if there any on other slot near bottom on back of your case. Remember to look for more than 1 gameport and 1 sound ports, if so, that means you have PCI sound card while you already have onboard sound card. Here screenshot, and tell me if there any alike ports in green circle at red circle area? In red area, it would be in different position which would not like in green area, but still can be a sound card.
