    Hello,

I couple of days ago the power in my house went down and my PC was on when it did.
When I first turn it back on, my monitor did not recognise my graphics card and would not display anything.
After switching back and forth between the 2 DVI ports (my graphics card has 2) it started working again.

But, when windows booted up, it was set to a very low resolution.
So I set it back to it original and thought that was it...
    But nope.

I tried running a game and that to was at low resolution and in windowed mode.
when i tried setting to higher resolution and full screen, it crashed.

I decided to try another game, this time the game closed and gave me an error saying something like:
    "could not initialise D3D."
I know that D3D means DirectX.
So I started researching a bit.

I have DirectX 12 installed as it comes along with the windows.
I have the most updated graphics card driver installed.
I have tried looking for a way to reinstall DirectX but with no success.

So right now I'm clueless as to what is the issue and how to fix it.
I'm just hoping something is not wrong with my graphics card or motherboard.
Any help will be very appreciated.

    Attached is my DxDiag file.

    Thanks!

    Update:
I have tried to completely reinstall my graphics card driver.
I also tried to reinstall windows (on top of my current widows. I did not want to format my HD).
    Both things did not help....

    Any ideas?

Remove the graphics card and try the onboard graphics.

    The system files are OK.
Run this batch file and upload the log.

"Windows has checked the file system and found problems."
On the Start Menu, right-click Computer > Properties > Tools > Check now...
Check both boxes and click Start.
Click Schedule disk check and restart.

I assume you meant right click the drive.
I ran the scan and it did say it found errors.
I clicked the restart and fix.
After the restart, I clicked ran the scan again.
This time it said that no errors where found.
I tried running a game again.... issue is still there

Does this mean you did a repair of Windows 7?

I'm sorry I did not state this before but I'm on windows 10.
What I did was download the media creator or w/e it's called to create a windows disk image file. Then I ran it. I don't remember seeing any "repair" option. I just kept pressing "next" to let it install. And after it was done I tested my games and nothing has changed, they where still broken

    I don't run Windows 10.
    Sorry I can't help.

FWIW After everything you have done it seems like a motherboard problem.

    I really hope not...
Do you think updating the BIOS could help?

    I doubt it.
Can you try a different graphics card?

When the onboard graphics and graphics card are displaying the same symptoms, it's almost certainly a motherboard problem.
Also, the System File Checker shows no errors. And after running Check Disk a second time, no errors were found.

A power outage can include spikes and surges which can be fatal for a motherboard.

I don't have another graphics card to test.
I'll try updating the BIOS just to rule out everything before buying a new motherboard.
Just wandering (as I never replaced a motherboard) after replacing the motherboard, will the only things I have to reinstall are the drivers?

I have a trouble plagued system that blue screens and unexpectedly shuts off etc. It's an old core 2 quad system that is running on an even older board so I suspect instability from the motherboard/processor interaction. Anyway, I reset the BIOS to optimized defaults and that has worked for me except that I can't use the machine for Twitch type streaming video. Youtube is fine just not the Twitch for whatever reason. PC will freeze or bluescreen. Maybe it's a long shot, but I recommend resetting BIOS to defaults and see if that resolves your D/X issue. Maybe the power outage corrupted your BIOS settings.

    Good call @AtlBo!
Unfortunately, if the power outage damaged the flash memory storing the BIOS, the motherboard is bricked.

Thanks @AtlBo . I'll give it a try and see if it helps.
