    I can't update to 9.0c and I have 8.1.
I have screenshots to help you help me :).
Well, from the start I was having problems with 9.0c saying "Directx 9.0c has failed to initialize. Rebooting may solve this problem" or something along those lines. I uninstalled directx and reinstalled 8.1 from the cd with a program. Now I don't know how to update to 9.0c again.

    Hi

What Service Pack do you have installed for your XP?
Are you installing this from the Admin account?
Disable your antivirus and firewall and try and re-install.

Could try installing DirectX 9c from HERE (full package so not a small DL)

I am running on windows xp service pack 3 and I am trying to install it on an admin account. The problem is I don't know how to install it. It asks for a directory (obviously being C:\Windows\System32\Directx) but where exactly? It's still 8.0 even after extracting it there. I don't know what to click and whatnot. Never had this problem before, it's a first.

All you need to do is to download and save it to a folder - the Desktop will do, then double-click the resulting file (it's about 95Mb), it should then auto-extract and install, just follow the prompts.

Didn't see the installer in there.. haha
Well, regardless.. after installing that it still says it's 8.1 in dxdiag.
    Any clue why?

I've really no idea how you're stuck on 8.1, smacks of Registry corruption, maybe caused by some over-zealous 'Registry cleaner'.

How old is the Windows installation?

If your asking about the operating system itself, I just re-installed windows about a week ago due to this problem. But yet I still have the problem even after formatting.

Sounds like you did a repair install which carried over the same bugs. If you have the hard drive space, try a parallel install.

    What was the program?

    I solved the issue.

As you told me to do, I created a separate partition but in a different way. Instead of it being a complete separate copy of windows I just over-wrote my existing C:\WINDOWS directory with a new one and that solved the directx problem. Thanks for the help and I hope this thread can help someone else in the future :).
