Disable network

    Hello, my friends.

I just bought a laptop with Windows 7. It seems all computers these days are set up as networks. I am at home and I am the only one using this laptop. Every time I boot up or the computer decides to take a nap (which is often; I have to figure out how to stop that), I need to enter a password to get to the desktop. It is so annoying that I want to shoot myself. I do not want to be on a network!!!!! :cry

I'd like to know what will happen if I disable the one LAN area connection network adapter? Will the password page disappear and that's it? Apparently I cannot disconnect the adapter, and I have no idea where the card would be.

In Windows Explorer there is a folder named Homegroup which I guess is part of the network. Can I just delete that folder? There is a message in it about a password and starting a group, but I haven't. There is another folder named Network; under that is EMR-PC, and under that is Users, of which there are none. If I disable the network adapter, can I delete these folders?

Essentially. what I'd like to know is whether there will be any ill effects if I do any of the above.

Thanks, geeks. I know I can always come to you for excellent advice.

It's just a privacy thing for when your comp is unattended, nothing to do with networks. In Control Panel change the view to Small Icons (top right) > Power Options - top of the left column is Require a Password on Wakeup. You may need to click on Change Settings that are Currently Unavailable to switch it off. You might also want to change the sleep settings and so on while there. Don't forget to save your changes.

Please do not start tweaking LAN or delete the Network folder! One advantage of a laptop is to take it with you and connect to free wifi hotspots. You start tweaking the settings or removing parts of Windows 7, you won't be able to connect wirelessly and perhaps other parts of the OS will not work properly.

If you are the only user, you probably want to start the computer without having to log in. I do this on all the computers in our home. My husband and I are senior citizens with no children so we trust each other on any of the computers in the house.

This is what you do in Win 7 to log in automatically:
    1. Click the orb (Start button in XP)
    2. In the run box (bottom left box that has a magnifying glass on the right) type
    Code:
    netplwiz
    and press <enter>
    3. Highlight your name and uncheck/untick the box that says "Users must enter a username and password to use this computer"
    4. Click Apply then close the popup

I assume the next thing you want to do is lengthen the time that the laptop either turns on a screensaver or blacks out the monitor.

    1. Open Control Panel and change the view to small icons.
    2. Click on the power options.
    3. In the left pane, scroll down to "Choose when to turn off the display".

If you aren't happy about the sleep settings either, go through steps 1 and 2 above then
    3. In the left pane, scroll down to "Change when the computer sleeps".

Thank you all so very much. Again, I appreciate the service that you provide to so many people who need help. I know I can count on you. I tell everyone who has a problem to go to Major Geeks if I can't help them.

You're probably not interested, but...I became interested in CS in the late '70s at AT&T-BTL and learned RAM and UNIX programming. Then UNIX became a word processor. I have taught myself every application I have used. I like programming and can read source code; but my main interest has always been applications, especially graphics. I have an AA in CS/Math from 1989; not very useful now, though. At 68, I am so not enthralled anymore. I just want to have fun. ;)
