If laptop is temporarily out of commision, is it wise to disable "broadcast ssid " from the sektop for better security?

I am sorry to report I do not understand a lot of your message but do appreciate your effort.
I guess what you are saying is that it does not matter, for security purposes, whether or not I have SSid broadcasting enabled or not.

    Hi Peter

Yes in a nutshell, shouldn't matter, especially if you are using WPA etc encryption as your passkey for logging onto the WiFi network would still be needed by anyone finding your ssid on their WiFi list.

But if you don't have any other pcs that need WiFi connection too then you can disable WiFi until you need it in the routers menu, for me I would leave it.

I will leave it diasbled till needed.
Is it a hard step to go from WPA to WPA 2?

No just need if your router supports it to click that option in the menu and then retype your favoured passkey and then try and connect your laptop to it, you may or may not have to re-type the passkey in again on the laptop (so it saves adn automatically connects again when in range)

I would note that if you have other devices that use Wifi connection, make sure they are ok with WPA 2 as some may not be.

    >> I did not do it before because I had read that many devices would not work with it.
    I have wep, wpa, wpa2..., and WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES].
I do not know enough about them to make the right decision.
    Thank you.

That is a good referral and thank you.
The only issue that seems to be a point of view is the SSID. Many say to enable and other to disable. Mine is disabled.
