Disabling NetBIOS over TCP?

    Ok, in my ever-paranoid state of seeking MAX-Security (as MAX as is "feasible", for me anyway) I happened across this (@ "Audit My PC" - I think it was):

    Disable NetBios over TCP

    * Right click on my Computer > Properties > Hardware > device Manager.

    * Click on View > Show Hidden Devices.
    * Click on View > Devices by Connection.
    * Right click on NetBios over TCP/IP > Properties
    * Driver Tab > Type > Disabled
    * Click OK.

    My question is: if one were to do this (and I, uh, did) would one also not want to select "Do not use this device" - from the drop-down selection box?

    Thanks in advance

    Not sure what you're doing there, but if you want to disable it for some reason you can go into network connections, properties of local area connection, properties of internet protocol in the general tab, advanced button on internet protocol properties, WINS tab, and disable it from there instead of device manager.

    Thanks Stev-er-ino! (ur majesty :-D).

    I'm not really "sure" what I'm doing here either (shocker, eh?) - but that's sort of the whole point of my post I reckon (er, ALL of my posts! :eek) .

    We (you & I) had done that (your method) awhile back, and I thank you again for it, and I (we) did it through my Admin account,. But when I went there by the method described in my first post of this thread (through Device Manager), and from the Limited User (web-surfing) account, it was not disabled (or at least not showing/not displaying as, disabled) - hence, my confusion.

    I just ran through it by the method you laid-out (in Admin), and sure-enough, it still showed as "Disabled", so I'll go back now, and check it from the Limited User, and try to determine what's-what.

    I'm just "a bit" confused (as opposed to my normal state of being MASSIVELY confused :-D) - and also still wondering if it's "ok" to select the "Do not use this device" from the drop-down menu (under the "General" tab)? I'm wondering if it's necessary to have that driver EN-abled, if I'm not using it - and if it's costing me anything (using any resources) - performance-wise, at all?

    Thanks as always, and I'll post back if I feel I need to ....

    probably doesnt matter if you disable it from where you were in dev mngr if youre not using it. give it a try though and let me know if anything shiny and cool happens. :)
