I recently had a virus which I removed with the help of your malware removal instructions. After removal I had no sound. I have a Dell XPS 400 that uses a Sigmatel C-Major audit driver. I went to the Dell support site, downloaded and installed the sound driver per Dell's instructions, and all was well with the world. Sound was back - no problem. When I restarted however, the driver was no longer there and I had to reinstall the driver again. How do I get the driver to "stick"?

    HI

Try installing the Chipset Drivers from Dell for your PC first then install the Audio drivers.

Thanks very much for the chipset driver suggestion. I downloaded and installed the chipset drivers and then reinstalled the sound driver, but the sound driver still disappears whenever I restart or shut down. While I really don't know, it seems to me that somewhere imbedded in my startup procedures is a reference to a location for the sound driver that does not exist and is not the location the driver loads to upon installation. Is there a way to check this out?? Thanks again - Den

    Hi Den

Which Windows version you using BTW?

Download and install CCleaner, will need this in a bit.

What you could try is to in Device Manager double click the Audio Driver thats erroring and in the Properties menu click the Driver tab then Uninstall and remember to tick the Delete the driver software for this device and click OK, a reboot is likely, but click reboot later if that option comes up.

Then run CCleaner and run its cleaner as this will clear up all old junk files and temps as installers do leave themselves in this loaction, it will however clear all your saved passwords for websites so if you have sites to auto log you in you will have to re-enter the passwords again or locate them in the CCleaner menu before running the Cleaner in the Options > Cookies menu and Hightlight the websites you autologon to inthe left menu and click the > to move them to the cookies to keep right side, this stops them from becomeing deleted.

Then run the Registry cleaner and do when prompted save the registry files, run this until nothing shows in the Scan for Issues window.

    Reboot.

Then try again with the install, as you have th echipset already installed now, just install the Audio.

YEA VERILY THERE IS A GOD AND HIS NAME IS HALO!!!

I have sound again. Followed your instructions with exception of last step; plug and play picked up a new sound card (??) and set up automatically after I rebooted. Very sorry to have omitted that rather important piece of info - I'm running Windows XP Media Edition SP3.

Can't thank you enough for your help. I'll recommend you guys to our tech group in the office!!

    Best regards - Den
