I've got an old monitor laying around and I'd like to gut it, but I know that it can be dangerous.

What should I be aware of when taking my monitor apart, and how can I go about safely discharging it? Or can anybody suggest a place that might be able to discharge and disassemble it for me, without costing too much?

Also, before anybody asks why I'm trying to take it apart: Robot helmet.

If it has been off for any length of time, say 24 hours, it will be safe. If it has been powered up recently there are components that hold and store some high voltages, which is where the danger comes in. These charges bleed off over time.
