    Hi All!
In the last couple of weeks, each time I go to shut down, my pc goes into disc check and truncates various files. The majority of the files are data logs from my antivirus and firewall. Several times now I have had to uninstall and reinstall my anti-virus program as it seems to disable it by removing necessary files.
When the system goes into disc check mode it states that one of my discs needs to be checked for consistency. As soon as I remove the anti virus program I then do a disc check to see if there are any other damaged files and it says that there aren't. So I do a fresh download and reinstall the program. I haven't the foggiest idea what could be happening here or how to recify this. Any ideas??Could this be the result of a virus?
I have done several virus scans since the onset of this problem and there are no virus's. I have defragged and made sure that there are no programs that could be interfering with the anti-virus program. The anti-virus program I use is from my ISP. It is called Freedom by a company called zero knowledge.
I also noticed that one evening before all this started I recived 600 hits on my firewall from the same ip addy. Can anyone offer any suggestions?
    Thank you
    D

well frequent disk checking is usually the sign of a virus or a failin hard drive. You might want to install another antivirus program just to be sure yours hasn't been disabled by something. Try out AVG or anti-vir, both are on the main page.

Dell may have included diagnostics with your unit, if not open up the case and look to see who made the hard drive. Most likely it's a western Digital or Maxtor.

These are the companies that most likely made your drive, they have disk checking utilities on the website. if you need any help finding them let us know.

You can get a free scan online at http://housecall.antivirus.com/. Makes a great secondary checker.

Off the top of my head, I'm guessing your antivirus software is causing Windows to time-out on shutdown.

You see, when you shut your PC down, Windows informs all the programs running, tells them to close, and then waits. This ensures that any files that might be open are closed when Windows quits. Certain programs, especially Anti-Virus programs, take a notoriously long time to do this. However, all Windows does it tell the programs to quit and then wait a specified amount of time. After that, it will shut down regardless of whether or not anything is still running. If the programs are still running open files, you could have a problem.

Shoot... there was a thread on this not too long ago that had a link to a proggie to change the timeout setting in Windows. Can't find it now. :(

Anyways, I'd suggest manually shutting down your antivirus program before you shut down. Make should ensure that it closes properly, and see if that helps.
